:) Hi I need some help on buying an external hard disk.
I have a choice of buying an external case like the transcend case by media home and then a 1TB (WD Green maybe).

Speed is not a problem budget is :P

Else I can get one like Maxtor or a Western digital external.

Which will be a better choice?

I need something basic for storage so I do not need firewire esata etc...

(since they will be more expensive).
Can you list me the choices with an approximate pricing.

wont advice a casing unless you have a spare hdd lying around at home. Else you should opt for seagate as they come with 5 yr warranty.. the 1tb should cost about 5.5k.. the 500gb around 3.6k . (all these are desktop external hdds) and not the portable ones (which are far more expensive like 6-7k for the 500gb).

Hope this helps!

:) Right but I have to buy casing+internal hard disk...
So it would come close price wise to an external hard disk right?
In such a case which is better?
What I plan to do is sell of my 500GB internal hard disk and use the
money+balance to buy a 1TB one...
So between the internal+casing and external which is better?
Also seagates are having high failure rate of late right?
Though both my 320GB+500GB are seagates..

hey,

why not use ur 500gb only rather tan selling it? (unless you need more storage) in which case id again advice an external since it would be the same price as a casing+internal. And no matter how good a case you get, i feel its always sturdier to buy an external (since the hdd+casing are made keeping in mind each component.)

And other than seagate you can consider WD.

:) Sorry for digging up an old thread...
Between the seagate freeagent basic 1TB and WD Home Edition 1TB which one is better?
I am going to buy it this weekend..

id say the wd 1gb.. of late iv been hearing a lot about seagat's crashing.. and with soo much data backed up you want your risks at the bare minimum.

:) actually I am not bothered about the 5 years warranty..That is a cosmetic thing according to me.by 3 years your current hard disk will be a dinosaur. You can always transfer your data to a new storage soln. after 3 years..I guess WD is more reliable and I will go after WD..

It would be a disaster if I loose all my HD movies..

Don't go for external hdd more than 80GB. Harddisks need cooling. Better go for internal hdd + enclosure if you don't want to lose your data in a hard disk crash.

How is an internal HDD in an external enclosure better cooled than an external HDD in a company fitted enclosure? :bleh:
