I have 2 computers at my home

1st computer:
Intel 2.4Ghz CPU with Original Intel Motherboad (with onboard LAN)
256 Mb RAM
Win XP Professional operating system

2nd Computer
Intel Motherboard with 266 Mhz CPU
D-Link 10/100 Mbps LAN Card
64 Mb RAM
Windows 98 operating system

I want to connect the two PCs over the network. I have the cables ready and have done this connection before but only when both of the systems were running windows 98. But now when i try to do the same with XP installed on one of the systems its not detecting the other computer. Trying to Ping the other computer from either of the side does not help. Please le me know what to do in this case and establish a successful connection.

Hey same thing with me... When I connect my 2 comps together, none of them detect the other comp :S
I had done some research and found out that connecting using just a LAN cable won't do, we need some special cable.
Can TE experts please tell us which is the cable and where can we get it?

have done this connection before
This means that you have the right cable... Can u please tell me which cable it is? Possibly can u post a photo of it???

either you can crimp it yourself or get it from any comp shop . you need CrossOver Cable to connect 2 PCs directly .

@rak007 . make sure you turn off or allow remote pc in your XP firewall .

i have an already crimped cable which i had used to connect the PCs but that was the case when both the systems had Windows 98 Installed on them. But now one of the PCs has XP and so i am not able to connect. Sometimes it happens that when i ping from the XP machine to 98 one i do get a reply but in my network neighbourhood i am not able to see the other PC inspite of keeping all the drives shared

It is apparently an issue that Win98 and Xp can not be networked via a crossover cable(I am telling just since i tried hard to do it once, and failed.) I searched for solutions everywhere for a while, and then decided to have a copy of xp on the 98se system too.....I guess the computer in your case is too weak to handle xp.....in that case i guess you might try having an 8 port switch and try the conventional networking.... you might refer to the page:
