Hi guys- a li'l networking problem..
I use MTNL TriBand service(256Kbps)- they hav given me D-link DSL-502T modem ADSL Modem which has a USB & Lan Port for connecting to PC.Im on Bridge mode.
I hav 2 PC's - one i wanna use exclusively for downloading stuff(gonna get Unlimited net soon)

Wat i want is to hav Internet connectivity on both PC's & b able to connect the 2 PC's also ( for transferring files from one to another)

Since the DSL-502T has both USB & Lan Ports- i was thinking of connecting PC-1 to its USB port & PC-2 on its Lan Port.
Now my Q is:-
1) whether i wud b able to get Net access on both ?
2) wud i able to transfer files b/w the 2 PC's as if they were on a LAN(100Mbps) & NOT be limited by the speed of the MTNL connxn (256KBPS)

Answer

1) Yes! U can have net access to both PC through UR MTNL triband

U need two LAN cards, One for UR PC 1 which is connected to MTNL triband, and the Other to Computer 2. U need a Network Switch or HUb whatever U call, else if U dont have that U gotta make a Crossover cable

and connect both the computers Directly.

Now run Network Wizard on Both of ur computers, selecting the connects through another computer on network for INternet on Computer 2

2) Yes U can transfer files b/w both ur Pcs at 100mBps for this U gotta connect both ur Pcs as mentioned on in Answer 1, but this time U gotta give an IP to both of ur Pcs U can have 192.168.1.1 for pC 1 and 192.168.1.2 for PC 2

Ping for the other computer to check if they r Connected e.g. if U are Using PC 1 select start-> Run-> ping 192.168.1.2 if it pings then U r connected.

PS: Assuming that U r connected through USB to ur ADSL MOdem and that U r Using WINDOWS XP and also perform answer 1 before answer 2

Just make the connection through the router. You have to configure the router so that it logs-in automatically (without the dialer) when it switches on. Once you can do that through the USB port then connecting the 2nd PC would not be a problem.

I was having the same doubts for my airtel connection but figured it out. both are now sharing the net connection and though i cannot ping, i can still see both machines over the windows network.

I've got Triband too. I also have a Belkin wireless router which I'd like to connect the net to. I've got 2 laptops at home. Here's the problem with each:

1. One laptop's LAN card isn't working so it can use the net only via the wireless router. Which is fine... but i dunno the 64-bit network key for the network and resetting the router settings won't help coz I still won't be able to get onto the router and configure it using the wireless.

2. The 2nd laptop's LAN card behaves weird, and it doesn't have wireless. Help me figure out why, please. I can connect this laptop directly to the internet via the ethernet card, no problems. But as stated above I want to use the wireless router. However, when I connect the router to this laptop via the LAN card, the LAN keeps getting disconnected every few seconds, it's very weird. I can't use it basically, it says it's connected but then it goes off, randomly, every few seconds. But like I said, when the DSL modem (or even my old Exatt PPPoE connection) is connected to the LAN card directly, the net works without any problems of LAN disconnection. I've tried both straight-through and crossover cables to connect the laptop and the wireless router, but the above problem still exists. Help!

I currently don't have any desktop to communicate with the Belkin, otherwise I would have setup the net easily and the first laptop would be able to use the internet via the wireless atleast, but then the 2nd laptop would still not work due to the LAN issue, lol. So basically, I need my 2nd laptop to be able to communicate with the Belkin via wired-LAN, so I can configure the internet etc. etc.

Hope I'm not being needlessly verbose :bleh:.

Have a similar problem - Need to connect my laptop to my PC via the UTStarcom modem for transferring files only. I do not want internet connectivity at all.

I just want a one time file transfer mechanism between two PCs. I do not have a crossover cable (just regular CAT5 cables)

This may seem very rudimentary but still...
Best way without any heartache is to connect via switch.. /Wifi Router... you can buy a second hand 8 port switch for some thing as low as 300 bucks too.. here at TE itself ... a lot of guys have spare one try posting a WTB thread..

I have like 3 machines... 1 is download rig, another is main system and 3rd is a laptop.. now any one can connect to internet ... previously i used 8-port Dlink Switch, Now i use DIR 300 Wifi modem... My Download Rig and Laptop connect to Home network via 802.11 (192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0) Modem 502-t is connected to DIR-300 via 802.3 and Main rig connects though 802.3 interface...

Mostly i switch on my main rig ... so i made a dialup connection named triband and shared that connection... (Note Ip's will chnage to 192.168.0.1---> change it back to bring it to home network-- > 192.168.1.2/255.255.255 (note here ... no need to give gateway now...)

Now my Laptop and Download Rig has Ips 192.168.1.3 and 92.168.1.4 respectively and they connect via my main rig ... 192.168.1.2 ...
Ip configs on shared machines---
(192.168.1.3/4 /255.255.255.0/192.168.1.2 DNS:192.168.1.2 /203.94.243.70/203.94.227.70)

While my Main rig Shows Triband to be shared connection with following ips
(192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 DNS:203.94.243.70/203.94.227.70) whenever i dial though MTNL Connect Shortcut rasdial triband username password
it connects... and if other machines namely 192.168.1.3/4 joins the network...
then internet works without any hitch... no need of any settings if main rig is connected other are themselves connected ... just open borwser and start using...

now if main rig is down and i need to connect via my other rigs laptop or download rig then ... for this i have a triband connection already made ...
simply run-> rasdial triband username password (note here:-- this triband connection should be made locally on each machine... whether it is shared or not it upto you.. generally one shared connection is enough..

Now you have an option if you just switch on other machines then your main rig ... simply use existing dialup connection... if shared Main rig is up no need to dial ... whoever joins the network is already on internet... else dial from local machine...

Note here : only one of the machine can dial at a time... whoever joins internet first will be connected... So make sure whenever Main rig or shared connection machine is up try to connect though it...
