Connecting 3 PCs to one net connection??

Hello everyone,
The super noob is back!!:ohyeah: :ashamed:

I need to connect 2- 3 desktop PCs to one net connection- say SIFY, Pacenet, Triband, etc...:)

Whats the cheapest yet reliable(as in good, noob proof, quality equipment) way to do so and please list out the stuff required to do the same and iff possible, the approximate prices and total expenditure!!:ashamed: :cool2:

Was thinking of setting up a wi-fi connection :P coz thers's a 4th element in the equation, a wifi Lappy that will hijack one of the desktop conections for a few hrs daily- but not much budget now coz i think a wifi setup with router+wifi adapters etc. will be quite expensive:( - maybe in due course of time!!:D

But if i get a breakup of the wifi thingie and the expense expected and if i just scrape my budget into it :P , i will go for it!!

Please advise/help this super noob!!:cool2:

Regards,
Bikey!!:hap2:

U can get a decent router for 3.5K.. Check out itdepot to get an idea... Also u will need a PC with 2 LanCards coz i dont know about Sify and all but in case of BSNL they allow sharing of net connection for businness users only. So in case any of these companies require u to dial out a connection then u will need a gateway machine. So select a pc and put 2 lancards on it or probably one of ur mobos has 2 onboard LAN ports na ?? Anyways dial out from that machine and enable internet connection sharing with the 2nd LAN port. Also let the first one get an IP address automatically or use the settings which they give. Now set the IP of 2nd LAN to say 192.168.0.1. Now either assign IP of all other PC/Laptop in this range or better let them get an IP from ur Gateway M/C. Also copy the DNS settings to all other machines. This is all i think.

Now if u dont have to dial and they give u a router then configure the router with the external IP they give and internal IP of say 192.168.0.1. And connect a switch or ur wireless router to this directly. And put all the computer on this switch and set IP to 192.68.0.2/3/4 etc. Dont forget to copy DNS settings. This is it.

Now if u dont get router and dont need to dial and they dont give u a static IP then also u need a gateway machine so do as it the first case. Though that case is especially for dialup users or for users u get an IP from ISP.

Whew....!!!!

hmm...

See, I have an Airtel 256kbps connection....split between 4 comps.... My desktop, 2 Wi-Fi laptops and an ooold Toshiba laptop with no Wi-fi.

I use a D-Link Wi-Fi router.

the router has 4 ethernet ports. So, I take 4 lan cables of varying lengths and drop them into whichever room I require. I dont exactly require more than 2 cables, but still in the rooms where the comps are used, I have still given an option of using the cable in case Wi-fi is switched off by mistake(which is rare).

So, basically, all you need is a router and lan cables.... LAN cables are the trickier aspect.... you need the LAN cable and then measure out the length and then crimp it....
