i have the same net connected at my place and same net at my office . (ofcourse different IP.) .. it has been done by my local cable operator. my aim is to run remote desktop.

home laptop = ip = 172.16.101.111 .... this pings to the server 172.16.100.1 (which is the default DNS)

office pc = ip = 172.16.101.112 ... this also pings to the server 172.16.100.1 (which is the default DNS)
but i cant ping my home laptop from office or vice versa.. ie. i cnt ping 172.16.101.111 (homepc) from 172.16.101.112 (office pc) .. inspite of them being on same lan... help lease.. i need this done fo remote desktop sharing.

You are physically on the same lan but logically on different subnets. Thats why you cannot ping your laptop n office pc.

Change your office pc's ip to 172.16.100.100 and laptops ip to 172.16.100.101

and subnet 255.255.255.0 on both pcs.

OR

dont change the ip's but change the subnets on both pcs to 255.0.0.0

Hope this helps.

usually ping between two machines on the same LAN fails because the XP firewall (or any other 3rd party firewall) is configured to block ICMP incoming messages...You need to switch off the icmp blocking on your local network
