Hey guys

i need a few inputs regarding basic consideration for purchasing a Domain for a college/project website.

my budget would be about 2-3k ,preferrably looking for around 500mb-1gb of space (will that be enough for a decent flash-based website).

also name some trustworthy providers for the same .

PS: im a total noob , just need inputs so as to provide our ITteam with a website .

Domain name will cost you anywhere between 200-700/yr. and you can get hosting for as little as 170/month with 30gb space and 300gb limit.

check godaddy.com for more deals, if you plan to buy from godaddy.. just ping me i have some offer codes for 20-30% of on domain names and hosting.

If your looking for .in or co.in domains, check out MITSU !
They have a SALE going on.

Thanks for the link to the great deal, but the site is barely functional. It keeps spitting out php errors and attempting to register takes me to the admin panel where it asks me to login. Is there any other way to contact these guys? Or an alternate website?

for domain, namecheap.com is also good..i would suggest u buy domain and hosting seperately.

having said that...most hosts give domain for free.

if ur looking for indian site, netspaceindia.com is good.

if it is just for the college mini/major project, then you can buy a co.cc domain for free...

www.co.cc, atm its down, experiencing it for the first time.

for hosting it depends... what the purpose is?? if it is just for showing it to your profs that you have done something :P then you can try to get free webhostings solution as well.

mitsu.in is very reliable and I highly recommend it for registering the domain name. you can buy hosting from some other website.

^ Thanks guys for the links

The site will act as a portal for sponsors as well public traffic (The site is for my FSAE team ).

Can any one ellaborate on Hosting And Domain name seperately (im a total noob @ IT).

would the IT team have full access to the site and can modify content at will ?

so what are the kinda prices should i expect as i need space for videos and graphix.

Hi lord_shrex,

Domain name and hosting are two separate things.

In non-tech terms, Domain name is nothing but a handle but which world can access your website. it simply points the person to Server where website is actually hosted so people don't have to remember IP addresses. imagine Opening google by typing "74.125.67.100" into browser instead of www.Google.com.a more technically correct Defination is available on Wikipedia. you can buy it from anyplace you have trust on. popular choices include namecheap and Godaddy. .COM domain costs around 450bucks

For Hosting,

this should help: How to Find a Good Hosting Company - Web Hosting Talk

If you have Credit Credit to pay, then I you can go with International providers like Hostgator,Namecheap. else you have to settle with Indian Providers if you want pay in rupees.

Hope it helps;)

you can understand like you are making a home on web.

Domain name -> Address of your website like yourname.com (similar like we get our home registered and get a address)

Web hosting -> Space for making website. Just like land for making home.

I hope things will be more clear now.

i bought my domain from godaddy 1.99$ per yr renewal 7.99$( after coupon code) hosting i am with outpowerhosting very reliable no downtime at al..
