Airtel has been ordered by a consumer forum to pay a compensation of Rs 5000 to one of its subscribers for having failed to activate the services .
Asha Sharma paid Rs 1,000 to Airtel for its services , but her SIM card was not activated even after repeated requests . She then submitted an affidavit to the East District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum about the issue .
Sharma paid Rs 1000 by cheque to Airtel , which she claims was encashed by Airtel but still her SIM card was not activated , forum President N A Zaidi reported .
The report further quoted him, "This affidavit is uncontroverted (un-challenged). Therefore, there is no reason to disbelieve it. We direct opposite party to refund Rs 1,000 to the complainant towards the cost of the SIM along with a compensation of Rs 5,000 for harassment and as litigation charges."
The report further added that "The forum decided to proceed ex-parte against the telecom major as "in spite of notice sent by registered post, opposite party did not contest the case. The bench also directed Sharma to return the SIM card to Airtel."
She had opted for Airtel Money scheme paying Rs 1000 to Airtel , for which Airtel issued her a SIM card , but even after the cheque was encashed , the SIM card was not activated .
