I currently have the following configuration:

Core i7 860 CPU
Gigabyte GA P55 UD3 mobo
Corsair 4GB DDR3 Value RAM
MSI Radeon 6950 2GB GPU

I am thinking of only upgrading the CPU to an i7 2600k and a suitable performance mobo for higher performance. This will probably cost me an additional 25K. I need fellow TE member's opinions whether this upgrade is a feasible idea or should I keep the existing config and wait for Ivy Bridge?

Thanks in advance :)

wait for ivybridge, though it will be a costly setup but by that time, SB prices would have fallen and you can take the jump....your rig and easily continue till that point and beyond.....

I have a Samsung P2350 (bought it after reading TE user Sathyanaidu's review :)) and I currently game at 1920x1080 resolutions.

^^Lousy ! What I can see is AMD having hard time getting the sample out and you talking about beating SB.

Let the ball rolls and then we will see. Even with Bulldozer I don't think AMD will be able to turns the table.

@OP : Core i7 860 is a great chip. Why don't you just OC it and use it. Spending on SB doesn't make any sense, you pay extra money for lackluster performance *upgrade* over i7 860. Wait for 22nm counterparts to show up.

For that extra money saved buy yourself a WC kit and a IPS panel or HD Audio setup ?

In your dreams buddy. From what little info is available, It would probably be more like Bulldozer barely managing to to match the first gen core i5's with 2 extra cores and about a 500MHz (or higher) clock difference. Frankly I don't think this situation is going to change till AMD gives up on the socket compatibility card they have been playing with for a while now.

I think upgrading from your current rig to SB is pointless, brainless almost. You'd do yourself good by saving the money, and maybe spending it later this year when Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge E comes out.

Thanks, guys! I really appreciate your opinions on this topic. I guess, I will keep the current config for now, save a little more and then move on to Ivy Bridge as and when it comes through. Of course, that progression depends on how the performance of that platform will be. Regarding Bulldozer, I'm not so sure. Going by the current scenario, I'd bet on Intel kicking AMD's a** out of the park. That, however is a separate discussion.

Thanks again, all! :)

Lacklustre performance upgrade over i7 860???? Performance improvement is pretty high I would say, but ofcourse timing might not be the best to buy since waiting and opting between SB vs BD vs Ivy is a more matured option.

How high can performance diff be man both same chips just 2600k latest version :P Performance diff will probably be within 95% of each other at same clock speeds yea 2600k will clock much higher but even then performance improvement will be just that 500-600mhz .... total WASTE of cash for sure moving from what you have.

Oh man I just realised best freaking upgrade for you .... SSD system will fly.
