I currently have a transcend storejet 250 GB external HDD which has a 2 year warranty on it. It is a USB powered one. I was thinking that if one fine day the Harddisk just stops working or develops some problems or any eventuality may occur, how am i suppose to recover from the same. I mean warranty and all is fine but data is of prime importance.

So can you guys please tell me what can we do to ensure that the HDD does not fail and if it starts failing, then what the symptoms and have a contingency plan ready asap to retrieve all the data. Please give your tips on ensuring the safety of the HDD and more over the data in it.

I for once take regular backups of personal stuff like Photographs etc. But it is really not possible to take backup of each and everything in the HDD.

One more thing, what if it just stops responding / does not detect etc one fine day, it finally an electronic device and bound to fail, how to save the data in such cases.

Any tips, suggestions or anything in this regard will be appreciated. :)
