Control Torrent download remotely?

Guys, I am a noob at all this networking thing, so..

Here's my situation. I download stuff from Hostel's internet. There we are given an ethernet cable and some settings we have to put under network settings. IP Address, Gateway, Subnet Mask, DNS? Something like that.

We also have computers in our Central Library. Those are always connected to the network.

I run Mac OS X and the other computers in Library run Windows XP.

I am keen about this since electricity and bandwidth both could be utilised if I could remotely control torrent downloads in those machines.

I could download torrents overnight in those machines. I cannot have internet in my MacBook overnight since the ethernet wires are there in hostel's common room only. Leaving one's laptop overnight could be a dangerous prospect.

I am sure all the computers are in the same network. I am not sure about the switches, the hubs, the topology as such.
 
assuming they are all on the same network (i.e if you can ping the remote machine by its IP), the easiest way to do it would be

a)to install utorrent with webui (ot transmission with clutch) on one of the library m/c

b) get the LAN ip of this m/c (ipconfig on command window) say 10.10.0.41

c) access and control your torrents via a browser remotely by typing 10.10.0.41:port in the address bar (port = port # configured for the webUI)
 
Of course , install utorrent/deluge on those machines and control them through the webui . The OS on your machine doesnt matter , you can simply control them through the browser .

I dont think transmission runs on windows . does it ?
 
It isnt working guys.

I set up the Web UI in uTorrent. The IP is 192.168.4.236 as checked from the 'Properties' of LAN Connection.

The Listening port set up was 51749 in uTorrent.

I set up an alternative port for Listening too, 54321.

Checkbox for 'Windows Firewall Exception' has been checked.

When I type IP : Port in Safari (Without spaces), it says 'Contacting IP'. It shows as if the page is loading. Then nothing happens.

In the end it says 'Server not responding'.

Did I miss something?

For webui to work you have to have a static ip and make sure you are not behind a proxy. If you are then check this thread and read it carefully.

^Dynamic IP doesnt matter if you are using the intranet ip to connect , that would remain same , only the external ip would change

@ bikal - are you sure you are on the same network ? are you able to ping 192.168.4.236 from your mac
 
Try teamviewer. Itz a freeware softy available, just google n find it. Here d only disadvantage is dat u can connect 2 one pc at a time. N need of ny ip bussine here. A pass wil be generated by d softy itself which can be used to conn. To d other pc.
 
To make it work you need to port forward the external ip to the computer ip on the network... this has to be setup on the router. I have dynamic ip... but it rarely changes.. all you have to do is go to the speed and port forward scan in Utorrent and it will tell you what your external ip is.. then you can port forward using that info.
 
I dont think static or dynamic IP changes things out here. Its an intranet.

I dont know where Mac OS X's terminal is. There is one called console, but its so much different.

BTW, I tried the 'Ping 192.168.4.236' from another Windows XP computer a few cabins apart. It had the IP 192.168.4.230.

The Terminal said 'Request timed out'. Similar to what I got from my browser back hostel 'Server not responding'. What's wrong?

Let me check deeper into this tomorrow, then I'll report. :)
