Well whats the difference between both basically.....Also which is good in long run.....Mom wants to retire our 14 year old stove with new one but while searching compareindia i find cooking range...are they better...Also what abt their maintainece aspect???

I think its the other way around, the stove has the baking & grilling whilst the range is just the burners to be placed on a table.

Does your mom bake? If yes, then it's worth considering a cooking range.

Two types: 1)Electric 2)Gas.

Electric are costlier and IMO, cost more to run. Gas ranges cost less and are cheaper to run. Do you have space to fit the unit? You'll have to cut the marble/granite in the kitchen to accomodate it in most cases.

Cooking ranges are not as efficient as hobs in terms of using gas. A hob uses less gas. But, last time I checked, the hob and range were similarly priced...around 14-16K I think. The electric range costed some 21K. Not a good idea if you ask me as you can't cook if there is no power and elecrticity costs are huge in India v/s gas.

Most importantly it depends on wher u want to install it.. depends greatly on that.. a cooking range needs the space of a whole kitchen cabinet (from ground to about 3 feet high normally).. where as stoves (or hobs whch are the newer an trendy concept) use just the top surface area of the counter.. if u hav space then u might consider a cooking range..

iv actually got both the things at home.. (diff houses hehe.. not the same kitchen) ones got a hob + a microwave (its got grill an convection in it) an the other has a cooking range.. personally i find the hob solution better, and as my mom does not find the cooking range oven and grill (its got both seperately) that effective.. it takes a lot of time to heat up and hence more cooking time.. and as a result we landed up buying a combi microwave for this kitchen aswell.. anyways there are a lot of other reasons y i prefer the hob + microwave solution:

1. it uses less space than the cooking range

2. its a lot easier to clean an mantain (as food is cooked the area around the range gets pretty dirty.. an hence to clean it, its necessary to have a servant around who has to pull the bloody thing out an then clean under it .. where as wit a hob (its installed in2 the marble wit cement or somethin i think) the counter can be cleaned from top an hence no body building required.

3. as the range @ home is not so effective (in oven an works) i prefer the microwave .. also this my be a personal experience as my range is almost 10-12 years old .. buts its not been effective since the beginning.

4. i feel a hob + microwave is now a cheaper option than a range .. as a faber hob+ chimney is selling for 10k (dont know bout the model thoug) + 10-12k for good lg/panasonic microwave where as a good range+elec chimney would cost upward of 30k i feel..

although here i dont hav an idea bout running cost as i never thought about it tat way..

Finally: I dont cook, an have hardly ever used the stuff, its just tat my mom, aunt an i had this discussion recently thinking bout wat to do in aunts house an hence wev decided on hob + elec chimney + microwave.

An plus i was getting bored so thought il share wat i realized talking to them..

hmmm i remember the cooking range we used to have.... it was massive.... then after comin to india... all this gas business...... sad...... :(

To be honest, I don't use the chimney in my kitchen on a daily basis. It's more or less for show now...or only when guests come over and cooking is done. cost me some 19-20K. I just keep happy thinking of the power I'm saving by not using it.

W.r.t hob, if you want one that lies flush with the granite, you will have to cut the marble/granite. So that involves some work but I guess the hob sellers will arrange that for you.

If you have a new kitchen recently done with fancy vaccum pressed membrane shutters 'n all that, the flat hob adds that beauty element to your kitchen. A Pigeon table top stove does not look good in a new kitchen. On the other hand, if you want to save a hell of a lot of money, go for a 500-1000 Rs simple table top gas stove.

Oh, and I don't know about you but I hate the hobs that have 4 burners in a space of 2 feet square. You keep two big pots on the damn thing and you can't use the other burners. A 3 feet hob is far better but I guess that's very costly..maybe 22-25K(I don't know why these things are so costly in India...fleecing I guess)
