cost of aquarium ?

I chucked my aquarium, after a year or so.The maintenance was just too much. Specially cleaning it out. Plus in winters you need to install water heating stuff and add add chemicals to de-harden the water. All this may be part of keeping pets, but I do not have enough time.

Guys, why not just have a small round ball with 4-5 fishes as aquarium rather then going for big rectangle box ?

Why not have 5 human beings put in a room the size of a shoe box and make them live their lives there, will they be all happy? Think about it.

Fish need space and they need proper aquariums to survive. When someone is planning to buy a pet he/she is deciding to buy the pet and provide it with proper care and living conditions. Fish need space, clean water, filtration and the right temps for survival and growth. Keeping them in bowls isn't enough. They will survive, but won't be happy at all.

^^

I understand bro but I have seen people having 2-3 fishes in bowl which is low on maintenance & safe too. I guess it does not require to have air pump.

Yes, I have seen that too but but it makes me mad to see such things. I love fish keeping and put in a lot of effort into keeping my tanks in good state. I guess when we buy pets we all decide to keep it happy and in good health. :)

I like your comment.

Fish bowls are highly not recommended. Rarely do fishes survive in a fish bowl. It can be only used for temporary purpose. Fish bowls have very less contact with air, increases ammonia and hence making the water poisonous.

I still maintain that there is absolutely nothing wrong in keeping a betta in a bowl as long as you don't put excess food and do a water change once a week or so. Having 10 gallon or bigger tanks with filtration and what not won't make the fish any happier; the flowing water and having to swim a greater distance to get to the surface might actually be an annoyance. Its kinda like having a gtx580 in a rig with a 15" display.

I mean if the pros grow them in such small tanks then how bad could it be for the fish?

Betta Splendens can be kept in a smaller aquarium. They still need filtration and warm heated water (if the keeper is in a colder place) for them to survive. They prefer static water so surface agitation is not required and plus they draw oxygen from the air. Betta fish are anabantoids and have the ability to breathe air from the surface of the water in case the oxygen levels are low in the fish tank. Try and keep larger fish like Cichlids in a bowl without any water movement and see if they will survive long. They prefer bigger tanks with the ability to hide and swim in larger areas. If kept in a small bowl without any water current, they will get stressed, get white spots (ick) and die.

^^ the people who do it, intend to sell the bettas. They cannot have 10 gallon tanks for each individual betta.

I had a betta when I was in school & i was foolish to keep it in a bowl. It was the only fish I ever had. It barely survived a year. :(

The breeders grow them in those tanks itself. Your betta probably did not die because of lack of space. Plenty of other reasons for them to die.

@black havk;I agree, even the other anabantoids won't be happy in a bowl but bettas by nature aren't great swimmers and seem to prefer confined spaces.

Hello Nehal,

How you doin mate? I happened to have the same result a long time ago with a Betta in a bowl. It always appeared to be bored in the bowl I had. They don't have enough space to hide and they get stressed. Mine had ick and died subsequently. :( Since then I decided to go the big tank way.

@ chiron:

Yes, Betta's are not extremely strong swimmers so it's better to have smaller HOB filters in Betta tanks. Smaller HOB filters don't generate much current in the water so they are great for Betta tanks. The farm bred Betta's can swim fine in larger tanks but what they like are places to hide like rock caves and alike. However, a Betta should not be kept in tall tanks as they may drown. Slim chances of this happening though. This happens because it takes longer for the Betta to rise from the substrate of the tank to the water surface to get air.

Hi Hawk... Me doin good... But not as good as ur fish I bet... :P

I too felt that my betta was bored of moving around such a small bowl. But then, I cannot comment as I have almost nil experience in handling fish!!

So, I thought you would be the best person to clear chiron's doubts.

Planted Tanks

For those who need inspiration in maintaing aquariums.....When maintained its a bliss to watch!
My fishes faced a ghastly end at the paws of my evil GR which thought it was amusing to scratch the aquarium.:P
After that i have put rubber fish, gravel and plastic plants in my bowl and happy with the results.
