Hi all,

I recently got a P4 system having an Intel 2.8Ghz 533Mhz FSB CPU on TE. I added 2GB RAM and XFX GeForce 6600GT. While using the system for normal use and internet usage, the temp is shown as 57-60 degrees celcius for the CPU. Is this normal? Also, Everest shows the GPU diode temperature as 80 degrees! on idle :S. I feel its too hot for both GPU and CPU. I have two 80MM case fans inside the cabinet but its not done any good. Please give me some good ideas to cool both components.

I used Thermalright XP 120+ cooler thermal paste but it is not that effective. I removed the heatsink of the Geforce and the paste was dried. Please give me some good advice. I want this system for another 6-7 years :P.

what cabinet are you using? Switch to a better cabinet. See if the heatsink of the processor is fitted properly. replace old heatsink compound with new one. clean fans if they are dirty. lots of cabinet fans doesnt necessarily aid cooling. that's a myth. proper airflow is important. and make sure you PSU is giving out enough power. that should help.

Check that your cabinet is very ventilated and the wiring doesnt obstruct the airflow in and out of the cabinet. Also, reapply thermal paste if necessary.

Your PC config is pretty old.Hold old is it exactly? The temps you mentioned are pretty normal.

What method are you using to apply the thermal paste?I doubt if you are properly applying it.keep this advice:-never take off the GFX card heat sink unless you overclock or it's too old.

Okay first off how to apply TIM, do not slather it like butter on toast, here is a guide -- Guide - How TIM Works & How To Apply It Correctly | bit-tech.net.

Next clean your cabinet well and efficiently at-least once in 2 months, use a vacuum cleaner (only in blow mode), lint free cloth for the nooks and crannies and and tooth picks for entrenched grime.

Then make sure you follow this drill, should extend the life span of your hardware, quite a bit. Also incidentally what PSU are you using to power your components? Hope this is helpful.

These suggestions looks good. I checked my CPU type in Everest once again and it is a Prescott model. I feel it runs a little more hot than older P4's. I applied Thermaright XP 120+ cooler paste for both CPU and Geforce core. It doesn't have the silver color, instead it is like white paste.

This PC was bought through TE market and I fully cleaned it because there were huge chunks of dust. Cabinet is fairly big and I am using VIP 400 watts SMPS. I wanted to know whats the best and cheap priced cooler for my P4. Please give me some suggestion. Thanks again.

^^ Change to a FSP Saga II 400W ~ 1900/- ASAP OR Corsair CX 400 ~ 2700/-. That PSU in your cabinet... its highly unreliable.

immediately do what ALPHA17 said(change your PSU),otherwise you won't get that 6-7 years lifetime, which practically seems impossible cuz at that period man will be vacationing on mars.

Like others said the PSU wont go well with that config and the GFX card. as far as the cooler is concerned, I dont think any of the coolers would be worth the money spent on cooling that preshot down... unless you can buy one second hand.

good TIM and extra fans ... will help you go a long way with the older P4s
Dont put extra fans. you'll simply block the system. Put 2 120mm fans. One in the front and one behind. Will be enough. And sleeve or tie together all the stray cables and make sure there is no blockage for airflow and air can move freely around without forming and localised hotspots.

Clean your system properly and even a stock cooler will do. After-market coolers are generally meant for OC enthusiasts.

^ It's kind of possible, but it's better not to use vacuum either to blow or suck.better to use can air.

Is using vaccum in blow mode safe from static electricity?
I've used it, safe enough, just don't bring the two components in contact or you can kiss your system Bye! Bye! sweets.
