Hey guys,

My configuration is:
Motherboard: MSI 785GM-E65
CPU: AMD Phenom II 550 BE
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 1x4 GB
PSU: CM Extreme Power Plus 500W

Problem:
PC will not boot. Even the BIOS screen does not appear.

Description:
This problem has been occurring from quite a while. Earlier when I had a Kingston RAM, if my PC was not booting, I would just reinsert the memory and voila! it would start working. And, the Kingston RAM would only work in 1 memory slot on the motherboard.
After a while, this stopped working so I removed my Kingston RAM and inserted my spare G.Skill RAM. This G.Skill RAM worked in all memory slots so I assumed my Kingston RAM was faulty and the problem was solved. This configuration with the G.Skill worked for quite a while (around a month) but now again I am having the same problem by which PC will not boot at all. I have checked the G.Skill RAM in my 2nd PC and my 2nd PC boots up so I am guessing it is not a memory problem.
Now, how do I check whether it is a CPU or a Motherboard problem? I don't think its a GPU problem but advice is welcome. I need to be sure of which part has a problem because I am going to be buying a new component so I don't want to end up replacing a component that is not faulty.

Thoughts:
According to me its a motherboard problem because CPU usually do not have problems but I need some suggestions/help before I go ahead and buy a new motherboard.

-Thanks!

try cleaning the memory slot and the contacts of the ram. also check ram is inserted and locked properly, basically check if any loose contacts.

Check all your sata prts if they are working fine or not. I have faced same issue and later I found out SATA port number 2 went bad and thats why all the issues are coming.

You mean the hard disk SATA port? If it was a hard disk problem at least boot screen would appear right?

did you try resetting the BIOS?
Will try this today.

try booting without any memory. you should hear beeps if you have a speaker attached to the mobo. cross check the beeps with your manual

@Op

It can be any sata port, and the problem can be in sata port/sata cable gone bad, even the sata port u connected with ROM/Writer.

Check your motherboard manual.
2 beeps is for memory IINM.

If your memory is ok, get the board checked.
It could also be your CPU if the on die mem controller is faulty.

IINM - If I'm Not Mistaken.
Sorry about using short hand.

To thoroughly rule out the memory, can you run memtest86 or any memory diagnostics on the other systems where the RAM is running fine?
If you are able to access the BIOS in your system giving issues, you can double check memory timings to ensure they are not aggressive settings.

So, I should switch the RAM to the working PC and check the memory timings? I haven't changed any settings anyway, its all on default, haven't overclocked.

No, I mean test the RAM modules using memtest86 on the working PC.. just to completely rule it out.

If your non-working PC is able to get you to the BIOS, you can have a look at the memory timings. Sometimes even defaults can be too tight.

Unlike before, memory controllers are now integrated on the CPU. There are rare cases of processors with "weak" controllers which are very picky with memory.
Unless the memory slots or DDR signaling traces are bad, it might not be a motherboard issue.

This is a real long shot but maybe worth looking into, can you check if your psu fan is spinning up when you start up the system. You just might be having PSU issues.

Ok, I have checked my RAM, PSU, Graphics Card and also my HDD. All of them seem to be working, so its either my motherboard or my CPU. How can I check? :x since I don't have another motherboard which can accommodate phenom II

I think its definitely mobo problem. If its under warranty RMA it quickly. If not go to a nearby shop with CPU and say i want to check if its working and try it on a compatible mobo.

Take your board and CPU to the MSI service centre and ask them to test the combo.
They should have a spare board and CPU.

But I don't have the receipt :o they'll give me replacement without a receipt?

They use the motherboards / graphics cards Serial No. to determine whether it is in warranty cover OR not. So go ahead and hope you get a speedy turn-around, Cheerio!!
