CPU Usage goes upto 100% :windows 7 Can it be caused by heating?

Hi Geek Fraternity,

I have been experiencing this problem which has recently started and not sure if it is related to recent installation of windows 7.

My Laptop starts to become sluggish after prolonged usage,

Im really not able to narrow down to a root case ,
1) as the time it takes before behaving in Frozen mode is not fixed , some times its 2 hours and sometimes 5 hours., however my laptop heats pretty quickly and I strongly suspect if that this could be due to heating

2) This sluggish behavior is always accompanied by 100% CPU usage, which tells me that it could be malware or virus causing this , however I cannot conclude that because I dont start any new application ( to which a Virus a could be attached) .

I thought this was related to Norton 360 app which I recently purchased , but the behavior persists after the removal of Norton

3) I tree to see which processes cause 100% usage , but usage is distributed amongst the applications running....

I have attached a screenshot when the lappie was sluggish from the application 'Process Explorer' which tells processor usage at that time and which app was using what resources

Please share me if you can suggest anything or If I can run a utility to narrow down the root cause.

If you need me to perform some tests, Pleas let me know.

Any help is help here .
Cheers (less enthusiastic)

Your windows 7 installation was from original disc?

needed specs of your computer.

All installation of Windows 7 done by me are fine never experienced freez issue.

Also have you installed proper drivers and may be windows 7 patch supplied(if) by your computer manufacturer?

Norton is a resource hog(there may be a removal tool for Norton for complete removal)

Use Kaspersky internet security(cheap and best).

As you suspected this issue is related to over heating.. I had the same issue on my PC.. Change the Thermal Paste on the heatsink.. ur okay to go.. :) use a good quality one like Arctic cooling MX-2 or something..

@yashchitale: read the post before commenting. Overheating is the result, not the cause of the issue. The 100% cpu usage is what needs troubleshooting.

virus in ur system is highly probable...u cud check in the task manager which service is using that much cpu power...that cud help!

Laptop Config should not be limiting factor an issue but still:

Zenith Director Plus Ultra laptop

C2D :5800

4gb ddr2

Nvidia 9600M

320 Gig
I suspect a virus because

, it would not start overheating suddenly after fresh Windows installation, and there is no definite time after which it start to behave robotic

and I suspect its because of overheating

Because the behavior is not triggered after a open 'A" particular application or run a command, usuall while watching video files and sometimes even while doing normal tasks. Also a scan did not suggest a virus possibility.

If its a driver issue ,, would 100% CPU usage be more frequent and prevalent at all times rather than after 2-3 hours of usage ?? Just asking...

As I said about Task Manager, it is usually shows the CPu usage divided among the applications open, so cant spot the needle in the haystack.

in my case it was the overheating which caused the 100% CPU usage.. as mentioned above all i had to do was change the heat sink thermal paste..

See i suggested u to download MSDN/Technet Win7 ISO coz u can check the md5 checksum and u can verify that the ISO file u've downloaded has the same md5 hashes or not by going on MSDN/Technet site... Most warez site just insert some silly softwarez in the ISO... (some ppl insert viruses also)... So do u want the link?

See u can go on this link and u can cross check the md5 hashes: http://msdn.microsoft.com/hi-in/subscriptions/downloads/default(en-us).aspx?pv=36:350
