Since there are not many decent exclusives for the X360, I decided to grab a copy of Crackdown and Crackdown 2. Both of them are pretty old but at least have a non-linear gameplay and seems to have received well. These should keep me occupied for sometime until the new PC setup is in place.

Anyone who has played these titles already, could you give me your impressions on the game? :)

TIA

The first one was a completely boring title. I didn't find anything even remotely interesting about it. If I were you, I would save my money on something better, say Ninja Gaiden II again.

Seriously? Despite getting these reviews?

Am I missing something here? :S

Oh well, I'd play and post the impressions since I've ordered them anyway. Not Ninja Gaiden again. Not with the same storyline at least.

I never go by the reviews anyway. I got the game, when there was absolutely nothing on my backlog and got bored of it within a half an hour of running around and performing random chores. I would advice picking up Perfect Dark Zero. It's a much better exclusive compared to Frackdown.

It's an awesome game. I definitely didn't imagine enjoying a game which was a launch title for this console, but I DID. The soundtrack is absolutely awesome. Joanna Dark is the female equivalent of James Bond. :D

Also connect to LIVE and get yourself some awesome XBLA titles like Shadow Complex, Limbo, Dishwasher, Scott Pilgrim V/S The World etc.

@Gannu- You got all the time in world? How could you brother. Every alternate day you come up with a new thread. "Eppidi, Thaanga mudiyala":P (slang in Tamil "how, cant bear with you")

I'm back home already. Got to begin Splatterhouse, yay! :D

Take that all of you! :bleh:

Alright, so I began playing Crackdown since Sunday evening and TBH the game is quite decent. From whatever I could gather so far, I'll sum it up as follows:

The gameplay is largely non-linear and draws a lot of resemblances from other sandbox style games like Infamous, Prototype, GTA IV, Just Cause and the likes. The protagonist referred to as the 'Agent' in the game, is genetically engineered and can wield some super powers - he can jump higher distances, climb skyscrapers, run super-fast, withstand high falls and all these powers can be enhances by collecting specific orbs or completing certain objectives that grant him these orbs. Agility for instance, determines how fast can he run and how high can he jump. Strength determines the health, how heavy an object can he lift and how far can he throw it. Vehicles can be driven and range from coupes to trucks - the races are arcade type needless to say.

2 arms and grenades can be carried around at any given time - these can be anything from semi-automatic pistols to sniper rifles to pump-action shotguns to HMGs. Grenades can be switched from type to type. Other than the standard issue available at the start of the game, all the other arms need to be acquired from the opposition which can later on, be supplied from the supply depots scattered around the city. Auto-aim is ON by default and cannot be changed - the crosshair needs to be aimed at the vicinity of the target and it locks down. Health is regenerative - however if the armor is completely depleted, the health drops down pretty quick if hit further.

The map revolves around Pacific City which is essentially 3 major island controlled by 3 factions and their respective kingpins - essentially the bosses. These kingpins in turn, have their generals who needs to be taken down before the kingpins themselves can be approached. All the generals and kingpins have a nasty support gang - they can get pretty annoying at times. The generals can be reached from one of the many ways - upfront facing all the foes or silently standing on top of rock from a vantage point so he could be sniped. Once the kingpin is taken down, the last mission that spawns is the 'Final Crime' wherein the remaining gang members of the faction will assemble at a particular location for a final showdown.

Graphics is pretty good for a game released back in 2007. The cell-shading technique is adopted in the game a la Borderlands and Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions. RenderWare from Criterion Games (Burnout devs) is the primary graphics engine for the game. Foliage, rocks, buildings, freeways, bridges, power-plants, oceans - they have all been designed pretty neatly. I'd say the in-game level design as a whole is pretty neat.

Soundtracks - pretty good. Largely trance and the likes.

Defeated the first kingpin and saved one of the islands. 2 more remain. As a whole, I loved it. :)

Completed the first title. Loved the experience although the gameplay resembled inFamous, GTA and some other mutated-superhero based titles. The good thing about the game was despite being a 4 year old title, it looked pretty good on the console! Considering the MS camp has a few countable exclusive titles to their fame, this game can very well be considered to be worthy of a playthrough. And despite being a sandbox style game, it doesn't take much to complete the campaign either. Blowing up stuff with the RPG was fun nonetheless. Anyhow, I'll sum it up briefly as follows:

The Good:

- Visuals - Cel-shaded graphics and draw distance, 2 notably different aspect of this game from other titles. You could see the explosions buildings and people from a great deal of distance without affecting the performance much.

- Level design - From skyscrapers to large domes to arenas to open air theatres to oil-rigs with helipads to container terminals to ships berthed on a dry-dock, the Pacific City has been designed very thoughtfully. The game's open world is vast enough to leave the player with different options to bring out the bosses.

- Gameplay - Although every other sandbox-style game resembles one another in a lot of gameplay aspects, this game had something better to offer in terms of character progression, intuitive controls (driving the car arcade style sucked a bit though!), the narrator's conversation with the protagonist and even the reaction of the crowd!

- Replayability - The game offers a lot of replayability value. Online co-op is supported as well. The DLC may add some value to it as well but since I haven't tried the DLC I cannot comment.

The Bad:

- Storyline - Feels bland at times being similar to other games (GTA for instance, except that we fight for the cops instead of the bad guys). The objectives seemed like a checklist - level up, defeat the generals, defeat the kingpin and fight the final crime.

- OSTs - Just the samples of tracks while driving cars. Other than that there's the central theme. Was kind of boring but all you get to hear more is the explosions, car honking in the streets, people chatting etc.

- Campaign length - Awfully short campaign length for a sandbox style game. 8 hours tops. Increasing the difficulty a notch might solve this but that means leveling up the character will take time.

Final Verdict:

8.5/10
