Hey guys, I am creating a website and I need help of TE's web gurus. :hap2:

Some general questions

1) Where to register the domain name? What is its cost? I heard that this company should be reputed and separate from your web hosting company, is that true?
2) Which web hosting should I go with?
3) How to maintain the site? How to take the backups / how to handle DOS attacks etc.

Some HTML questions

1) What should be the width of a page? Fixed or floating? I have decided the width as 1100 pixels, is that fine?
2) How can I create a logo for my site? Anyone does that for a small fee?
Thanks for reading guys. :cool2: Now help me please...:D

Buy domain from namecheap.com or name.com or domainsite.com ... godaddy sucks.

Web Hosting downtownhosting.com , dont go for anyone who is overselling extra like servage.net, hostgator etc...Better check out reviews before buyin anything --> webhostingtalk.com

DOS attack, well if you get that in hosting then probably there's nothing much you can do..your provider will take care and suspend your account, ban the IP. DDOS is very less change if site is static or unpopular.

Take backups through phpmyadmin usually, or create rsync which should send mysql backup of your website to your email every night.

Make sure you buy Linux cPanel Hosting (affordable) or else Windows Plesk Hosting.

A: Well, there are couple of sites..Web hosts usually give you an option to register a domain name ! But you could register it elsewhere as per your convenience..I've personally tried Squarebrothers.com and had a good experience ! one of the cheapest too..

2) Which web hosting should I go with?

A: Well, there are free hosts and paid hosts..some offer free space if you register a domain with them. But you can always separately host your site.

You have options like :Windows Hosting,Linux hosting,MY-SQL..then there's support for PHP,ASP,.net,MS extensions..

3) How to maintain the site? How to take the backups / how to handle DOS attacks etc.

A: The Hosting firm usually backs up content every now and then..You have an option to backup using the CP too.But then you'll have the actual content right on you PC ! just upload it back your host/server location through FTP if something should happen!?

Some HTML questions

1) What should be the width of a page? Fixed or floating? I have decided the width as 1100 pixels, is that fine?

A: Well that depends. When i design a personal/non-comm. site i usually keep it under 700 ! but you can vary it as per the content..Always take into consideration that the site will be viewed at different resolutions !

2) How can I create a logo for my site? Anyone does that for a small fee?

A: Guess,I can help you with that..

Your still free to ask other talented TE members for their inputs and then decide..

Thanks for reading guys. :cool2: Now help me please...:D

Hey, thanks a lot thetoxicmind! Your help is much appreciated.

BTW, know any good hosting companies? How is ewebguru?

I found cheapest .com here Welcome to 250i.com | Supersite

I dont know how they are managing the discount, so better call 'em up and check.

hosting: consider jodohost.com. they are very decent and do daily backups. Best part is they restore backups without any fuss. they have a very good support forum which is open to all. guess you should look in there.

Backup/DOS...leave it to the host. But yes, if your site is running off a database, its always good to keep a copy on your local machine(both files and database).

Keep the width around 1000 px. Will fit most of the screens. I prefer liquid width designs.

Logo: this should get you started. Web2.0 Logo Creator by Alex P

Toxic has already offered his help. you should take it.

Disclaimer: 250i.com is not my site. Reached there through google ads.

Just do a googe search among indian web hosts..

But you'll really have to search to find a decent yet affordable one!

I chose SquareBrothers simply because its cheap and their office is bout 4kms from my place...

And like Arya suggested,Liquid width designs would be a better alternative...

Few indian web hosts I found on google:

HARSHA INFOTECH - A LEADING WEB HOSTING AND SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY IN INDIA

Web Hosting India Hosting Cheap Web Hosting Linux Windows Unlimited Hosting Reseller Hosting India Best Affordable Web Hosting Companies in India

Web hosting India, cheap web space, web hosting companies in india, affordable web hosting.

Website Space | Unlimited Bandwidth & Domain Registration India | Web Hosting Service

ZNet India® - Top Web Hosting | Dedicated Hosting | Domain Registration

Web Hosting Mumbai Web Hosting India Website Hosting USA

Hosting | Cheap Web Hosting | Web Hosting | Asp Hosting | Domain Hosting - Indiatimes

BTW,What kinda site do you have in mind?Rather what is it for?

I think it would be better if u register for an account at 110MB.com and then use their paid upgrades(most are one time only) to add features to ur account. 110MB is a reputed webhost and has a large forum with nice members who solve most of people's queries.

OK thanks a lot guys!

BTW, the one question that's bugging me is that although these companies are calling themselves Indian hosting companies, does anyone of them have their server in India?

there is no such thing as Indian Webhost as nearly all data centers are hosted outside india. there are few people who have thier own data center in india but that costly like hell.

So mostly you would be dealing with resellers of International hosting companies. these resellers would speak your language and are happy to take payment in your local currency. these hard working people can be called "Indian Webhost". but anyways, your site would still be hosted at some data center of planet one :P

Although there is nothing bad getting hosting from Reseller, infact its more convenient.

But just make sure you aren't dealing with any One man army;)

As said by Me on Some other Forums:P
