creative 4.1 sound and movies

needing a surround sound system in my room with an extream budget, i decided to pick up the creative m4500 4.1 surround sound system.

the speakers are good enough for me, it does the job really well for music listening.
the problem comes when i watch movies, the sound comes from all 4 speakers, but the dialogs and voices are almost MUTE. i cant hear any talking.

after doing a little reading, i kinda figured, the voices come from the center speaker during movies present in a 5.1 system. watching movies is now useless on my system. i have to disable the surround settup (using realtek control panel driver) before i watch a movie!

is there ANY way i can get movies working with voices on a 4.1 system? or have i made a huge mistake by picking up 4.1 :(

as long as your speakers are configured as 4.1, the voices for the center will be cent to the fronts so that they can be heard. You might want to set your output to 4 channel in your surround decoder as well :)

the realtek sound panel has the option only for 5.1 ( and i can disable the center speaker from there ) the others are normal stereo and quadrophonic.
i tried quadrophonic and the get voices but the rear speakers dont work .
another reply in a diff forum told me that the prob does infact lie with the 4.1 settup cuz 5.1 movies use the center speaker for voices and dialogs i think

quadrophonic = 4.0=what you should choose. though the speakers are 4.1, the signal from the pc is 4.0, and the subwoofer signal is obtained from the other channels like in a 2.1 system. If you're not getting sound from the rears, make sure you've plugged them in the correct jack.

if the voice was heard on the center speaker only, then how do you suppose most of us with stereo speakers hear the dialogs ? usually, if your no of speakers < no of channels, then it has to be appropriately downmixed. downmixing to stereo is done my default, but to downmix to 4.0, you will need to configure your decoder

This is what you have to do for ffdshow.
