12th March 2006 is gona go down in the Cricket's History Book .
Two Records (I would say a Miracle)in a Day ..........
Iam refering to the 5th ODI played between South Africa & Australia played at Johannesburg,South Africa.
Guys ,Its truly the Greatest Match which the World would have seen.....
Nearly 900 runs(872 to be precise)
scored in abt 600 balls(599 to be precise) tats at a rate of abt 9 runs per over
Australia scored a world Record 434-4 in 50 overs and were all set for a victory .....but anything can happen in the game of cricket and it happened.......an impossible score was made possible courtsey Herschelle Gibbs.....and South Africa reached the highest target ever in a one-day international (438-9) to cap an unforgettable day of cricket and win the five-match series 3-2.
Here is My Descrption Of the Match:
The Day began with Australia winning the toss and electing to bat on a perfect batting wicket at the Wanderers and they utilised this to full perfection. The openers(Adam Gilchrist (55) and Simon Katich (79)) gave an ideal start scoring 97 of just 15 overs.
But the opening partnership was ended by a stunning one-handed catch by Andrew Hall ( but that was soon forgotten in the thrashing that followed)
When Ponting can to the crease ,he began cautiously but was soon thumping sixes. ( This is the same ground were he had hit us all around the park in the 2003 World Cup final in which he scored an unbeaten 140)
He then put on 119 with Katich off 93 balls, before Katich was out when the score was 216.
But then came his partnership with Hussey(the new sensation in Australia)which occupied just 96 balls as the pair went all guns blazing with almost any ball on a length hit for four or six and they helped reach the score to 374 ,when Hussey (81 of 51) got out followin to a catch in the deep.
After Hussey had fallen to a catch in the deep , the score was 374.
Then came the World record 400 , which came up in the 48th over with Roger Telemachus producing four no-balls in succession.By then, Andrew Symonds even had joined in the party .
But soon Ponting (165 off 105) was holed out at deep extra cover in the same over, which cost 28 runs in all and the score was 407-4 and by the end of 50 Overs they reached 434-4.
Seeing all the carnage inflicted by the Ozzies on the Proteas , I had thought tat Australia had proved y they r the World Champions and South Africa were looked doomed to lose heavily(say abt 200-250 runs) ......
My belief was further strenghthed with Boeta Dippenaar's wicket ,falling in the second over and the score being 3-1 with abt 430 runs needed of 48 overs(run rate of abt 9 per over) .
But I and all the people arnd the World who had thought tat it was victory all the way for Ozzies were proved wrong ,coz Gibbs and Smith had other ideas.
In less than 21 overs they put on 187 runs in extraordinary fashion, actually reducing the required run rate and making the unthinkable possible.
But that partnership was broken at 190 when Smith was caught in the deep
but Gibbs was in no way to put off his strokes and accelerated to reach his century off 79 balls.
After hitting successive sixes off Symonds, he moved to 175 (I had thought tat he would broke Saeed Anwars record and score arnd 230- 250 going by his rate)in the 32nd over with South Africa on 299 & still only three wickets down and suddenly the whole match had turned around and the hosts were favourites to win.
But trying to hit Symonds over the covers, he drove a catch to long-off and got out ,score 299-4 and then came Jacques Kallis who got out caught and bowled by Symonds after just scoing 20 , score 327-5 , & this set up a tense finish in the offering .
Nathan Bracken's final spell looked like it might settle matters Australia's way and he finished with figures of 5-67.
In the 40th,Nathan Bracken (5-67 )started his final spell and he conceded just two runs, and in his following over he had Justin Kemp caught at point and only three runs were scored.Score SA 355-6.
Suddenly, 77 were needed from the last seven overs and it seemed too tall an order and the it looked like it the Match will settle Australia's way.
But South Africa's Johan van der Wath hit 35 off 18 balls and Telemachus 12 off six to throw the game wide open again.
Then came the Final Over Score SA 428-8
Seven were needed off the final over with two capable batsmen, Mark Boucher and Andrew Hall, at the crease.
The first ball Boucher hit it staight and I had thought it was four but it was stooped by Lee's foot and a single brought Hall to strike.
And the second ball Hall hit Lee over midwicket for four and it left two wanted from four.
But then he was caught next ball to bring Makhaya Ntini to the crease and it really build up tension all around even in my drawing room .
Makhaya Ntini scored a single which brought Mark Boucher to strike and the very next ball he hit powerpunched four driven over mid-on to seal the Victory:clap: for SouthAfrica.....
And to take the World Record away frm Ozzies which they had held for just only a few Hours ..............
Man of Match: Herschelle Gibbs
Actually it was Mens of the Match but Pointing (who I think had not recovered from the Shock) awared it wholly to Gibbs
