As requested by Udit , I thought of putting up a guide for crossflashing Sony AW-G170S to NEC Optiarc 7173S. The 7173S is a labelflash capable drive which is analogous to Lightscribe. In addition to make your own labels on label side in labelflash designs can be orinted even on the data side , where no data is written basically. For more about labelflash plz google
Now as you all know flashing with hacked firmwares is a risky job and hence you can render ur drive useless or u may loose the warranty also.
So all risks are upto the user and plz dnt hold me reponsible for anything
DO EVERYTHING AT YOUR OWN RISK. This worked for me without any issues and I am providing the guide as well as the tools which I used.
Here the step by step guide.
1. Eject out any media there in the Sony Drive to be flashed.
2. Make sure you r on a UPS , there should nt be any interruptions in any of the flashing process, so turn off all firewalls and antivirus programs. Shutting all other programs is recommended
3. Download the following rar from rapidshare and unrar it.
RapidShare: 1-Click Webhosting
4. GO inside the extracted folder. First thing to do is run NECWinFlash.exe and take a dump of your present firmware.Save the dump to a preferred folder of your choice.
5. Now first thing is to flash with a NEC 7170S firmware. (The 7170S is actually same as a Sony AW-G170S model). This is being done just as an extra precaution so as the boot code modifier in the next step dont have any issues. To do the flash open LD7170S 1.M1 RPC1 Firmware Package.exe and click on the flash button. Till its finished plz be patient for a minute or two even if the progress bar stops somewhere. After the flashing restart ur comp & get back to windows and check whether the drive is being detected properly as an Optiarc 7170S or nt
6. Now is the boot code modifier part. For this again go to the extracted folder and double click on the bfl7173S.bat file. This will start the boot code modifier on the DOS mode. Answer the queries as required and start the flashing. Wait till its completed. After its completed the drive green light should be blinking as there is no firmware loaded in the device. Restart the computer and after reboot also the blink will continue and the drive wont get detected ...dnt panick as this is what is expected.
7. Coming to the final step.Double click on LD7173S 1-M1 RPC1 Firmware Package.exe and click on flash to put the 7173S firmware into the device. Wait patiently till flashing is completed. After that restart windows and now your drive should be detected as an Optiarc 7173S. Your drive is now a label flash equipped drive and you can have your own personalized messages even on data side( providing no data is written there)
Please be patient and dont do anything while flashing or running the modifier.
Do not skip any of the restarts that are recommended....Post back any queries/confusions.If you are not sure DO NOT TRY THIS.

Supra
