Crossover cable help

-Anish-

Explorer
Alright,

I have forgotten all my networking skills :gap: so i need some help. I have around 400GB of data that needs to be moved from my Desktop to Laptop.

I got a cross-over cable (RJ-45) from Croma today and dont know how to begin with. I have a wireless router too if that might help.

Also if possible need to know what are the other uses of this particular wire?

Oh, forgot to mention that the transfer is between Vista(desktop) and Windows 7(laptop) :ashamed:

TIA

Didn't get your query properly, but a crossover cable is needed when connecting two ethernet devices directly without going thru a hub/switch/ router or a hub/switch to hub/switch. But most devices nowadays auto detect the type of connection and compensate, so there's no need for a crossover or straight cable.

Try like this

connect ur laptop and desktop using crossover cable and enter settings like this

Laptop
=====
IP: XXX.XXX.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.2

Desktop
======
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.2

I used this kinda settings but i also forgot :ashamed:

Try this and let us know it worked or not

I want to transfer data from my desktop to laptop and need a really good transfer speed as its a lot of data ~400GB. Ive heard that a cross-over cable helps in that. But dont remember what exactly needs to be done to configure that.

Right after i attach my desktop and laptop with this cable, do i need to do anything else? I dont even see any kind of detection of local area or anything.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks sumchamp, tried this but didnt really worked. :|

Meanwhile, searching google, but keep pouring in with suggestions :)

IP: 192.168.1.1

In most cases Gateway is not all at required when you connecting 2 devices through X Cable.

Default gateway and DNS refer to Internet connections not LAN connections.

Also u can try this

Desktop

IP Address: 192.168.0.1

Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway and DNS: leave blank - let the internet connection sort out your DNS, and it will be the gateway for this PC, so you don't need to set a gateway at the network card.

Laptop

IP Address: 192.168.0.2

Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS: The IP address of your ISP's DNS servers. If you don't know these, connect to the internet on the Desktop PC and on that PC type the following at a command prompt:

ipconfig /all

This will cause a listing of you IP settings to be shown, including the DNS setting assigned to the internet connection. Use the same DNS IP addresses for the laptop.

thanks a lot ppl, will be back after i try all this ;)

Update :

This thread can be closed. Mission accomplished.

What i did :

Both of my systems had the same computer name, hence changed one of them.

I just had to allocate the IP address as given by sumchamp and cisco_tech and it worked wonders.

Getting transfer speeds of ~14Mbps now. Much better than wifi transfers.

Thank you Sumchamp and cisco_tech. Repped :gap:
