The November issue of Custom PC magazine features the results of their 2005 PSU Labs Test. Last year, CustomPC was the first UK publication to scientifically lab test PSUs. They visited Maxpoint in Hamburg, the only company in Europe which has the equipment required to properly load-test modern PSUs
This year they have gone even further, testing 29 different PSUs in two different categories, up to 500w and 501w and higher.
This feature is well worth reading, and may open up some eyes. Which six PSUs blew up under 100% load? You'll have to pick up a copy of the current issue, or when the feature is available on their website I will post a link.
Meanwhile here are some highlights:

Meanwhile here are some highlights:
Generic 400w: "Performance from this PSU was dismal... switched off when we attempted the 100% load test (400w)...these tests show this is a 300w PSU...even at £12 its an expensive paperweight"
Thermaltake PurePower 480APD: "The Pure Power is incapable of producing its claimed power rating...after just seven minutes at 100% load, it overheated and shut down."
Ultra XConnect 500w: "Explosive and inefficient"
Tagan TG480-U01: "Last years winner with added PCI-E support, but beginning to show its age"
Generic 600w: "failed to deliver 600w, switched off after a few seconds at 75% load (454w)...a 600w PSU for £25 really is too good to be true"
Q-TEC 650w Triple Fan 24p: "Steer well clear of this PSU...it was drawing a ridiculous 725w from the mains to produce 498w...after a few seconds at 100% load the voltages jumped up and down by as much as 20%...after a minute it triggered the trip-switch of the lab"
PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 510 Express/SLI: "Very stable, but its noisy and expensive"
Enermax EG701AX-VE(W)SFMA: "Enermax claims that both the 12v1 and 12v2 rails can output 18a, but the PSU switched off when we tried to draw more than 9.8a from 12v2... it isn't suitable for an overvolted system."
Seasonic S12-600: "Everything a high-end PSU should be - powerful, stable, efficient" - CPC Premium Grade Approved
