Cyclone nears; schools, colleges shut in Mumbai: Rediff.com India News

A cyclone alert has been sounded across north Maharashtra and south Gujarat, besides coastal areas, by the Meteorological Department, in the wake of a deep depression over the Arabian Sea.

The cyclonic storm, referred by the IMD as Phyan, was likely to intensify further and move towards south Gujarat and north Maharashtra coast, between Alibagh and Valsad, by late evening on Wednesday, warned the IMD.

The Met office has advised fishermen not to venture out to sea in Kerala [ Images ], Karnataka, Goa [ Images ], Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Cyclone Phyan, with a wind-speed of approximately 102 km per hour, will hit Mumbai [ Images ] at approximately 5.30 pm, warned experts.

Authorities have urged the residents of low-lying areas in Mumbai to vacate their houses and move to safer locations.

Schools across Mumbai have been shut and students have been asked to go back home, in view of the impending cyclone.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has asked colleges to shut early. Government offices will shut at 2 pm.



The Disaster Management Cell has been put on alert. Phyan has been declared a Level 6 Cyclone, said IMD officials.



They have also warned that Mumbai and Thane districts will receive heavy to very heavy rains for the next 24 hours. The IMD has predicted 'extremely heavy rainfall' in south Gujarat.

Squally winds reaching speeds of 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph, are likely to commence along and off the south Gujarat and Kerala coasts, besides Lakshadweep, from today. It will hit Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra coasts during the next 48 hours.

 
Ever since the cyclone warning has been issued a couple of hours ago, its stopped raining here in Fort. LOL :)
 
^i also work @ fort , and its pin drop silence outside right now.....and yes a couple of offices have shut and people have been given the choice to go home......

is this the kinda silence b4 the storm :O

its best to leave for home especially those who live far away. No need to take chances.
 
Rain has completely stopped in chembur.....also sunshine has better and now u hear this..lol..weather department always says the opposite here

11/11/2009, 2 pm (IST): Maharashtra Chief Minister has said emergency services have been activated and people in low-lying areas have been put on alert. Extra local trains are being run to take people home quickly. It hasn't been raining in Mumbai for over an hour.

11/11/2009, 1 pm (IST): The state government has asked all schools to shut for the day. Children already in school are being sent home as soon as possible and afternoon session not to be held.
 
i have to say... i'm really enjoying the weather (here in gujarat). it's raining, overcast, lovely cool breeze blowing. temperature down to 24 degrees or so. totally out of season weather and i'm loving it :P
 
Yea, seems it passed Mumbai. It was very very windy till 2PM here and now it's pretty calm with overcast skies and small drizzle. MET department predicted that it would reach Mumbai by 5PM, seems they were off track by 2-3 hrs :ohyeah:
 
Doplar Radar for weather (Tsunami etc) prediction imported from China at Mumbai still lying from last 12 or more months without installing as no Chinese workers/techi. to install it?

now they planning to call (import) Chinese workers for...

they are predicting using old techniques... every Mumbaiker know how accurate they are...

Actually it came to Mumbai felt on the pothole direction changed and it passed other way...

Need to sue the BMC

some news channel told its 250km from mumbai and it will hit at 10pm today..that was voice of mayor shubha raul

The indian meteorological department said that the Cyclone named Phyan was about 250 km west of Goa at 2.30 a.m. Thursday morning, it is been issued an "orange" alert. That is one step below the red alert given for a severe cyclone.Reportedly the Cyclone will hit Mumbai tomorrow around 5.30 am Thursday morning.
