It is better to self host all your passwords if its possible.
I wouldn't throw this statement out there without also adding:

1. You have a solid backup strategy in case the self-hosted server goes down, otherwise all your passwords go kaput and you will be locked out
2. You ensure the self-hosted instance is only accessible by you and the people you choose to give access to. You most probably don't want to expose it publicly without knowing possible repercussions.
3. You thoroughly vet the solutions available for doing this.
I was wondering how the hosting process works? Is it like you run the hosting app on your home lab or just rent a VPS and run it there?

You can do it both ways. Play around locally first before doing all that.
