I am having a requirement of accessing net from my home PC (predominantly for using skype).

I don't have a telephone connection, and don't want to buy anything where wires are supposed to be laid down or setup is required (i am going to move house in a month or so). The only option left for me is either to use a data card or use the net through my phones.

Has anyone here used these ? How is the speed and what kind of cost (initial + recurring) is involved ?

^I'm using a TATA Wireless USB Modem. Size of a pen drive. Gives you net access anywhere in the country thru just a USB slot.

Costs : 4000 (One Time Non-Ref), plans = 700/month (1GB) or 350/month (500MB)

I get DL speeds of around 15KBps, very good for surfing !

Do speeds vary in diff cities. I am going to use it only in Mumbai and mostly for voice conferencing with our offshore clients through Skype only

Don't even think of Voice conferenciing over a GSM/CDMA connection

the latencies are too high and the bandwidth is too low

Dunno but MSN voice chat is like a staccato machine :P

Its good enough for surfing, IM and the odd few downloads, not more than that.

nah....the speeds you get on both CDMA and GPRS data cards or thru phones is very dicey...

At the best of times, you get 40-80 kbps (dial up like) which will work with voice chats

This would frequently drop down to 15-30kbps which wouldn't suffice.

You can't have a business oriented voice chat on such a line

Can someone please confirm whether they have used skype chat on a wireless card. Skype is supposed to have a very good voice quality even over dial up

anycase I too am having for a similar problem . I have a mobile phone with gprs

I guess CDMA / EDGE data cards have better speed than gprs. are all data cards

TATA / RELIANCE / AIRTEL using edge / cdma ? What's the best among these?
