Storage Solutions Data corrupt from HDD USB to HDD USB copying

whenever i try to copy a large data (a lot of pics or similar small sized items) from one hard drive to another then it results in data corruption.both drives are connected to my system using USB 2.0 casing. and hard drives will become unresponsive and i had to turn them off and on again for them to work.
Indicates inadequate power to the HDDs. Now whether its the system that cannot deliver the power or the casings themselves that are the problem is undetermined. If you had non-casing HDD's you could elliminate your system as the culprit. It only requires one seagate exapansion or similar.

Do you have any USB y cables. so that each HDD uses two ports on your system instead of just one.

I think you don't need to backup for the experiments, because you could copy to a spare folder without affecting existing data. But it is your data, if you are not comfortable doing it without a backup, definitely backup.

You say the zip experiment probably failed - but it is very important to know where it failed. If it failed in zipping, the issue remains the same. If it failed in transferring the zip, then you are diagnosing the problem wrongly as being due to lot of small files. It is more likely to be the part of hard disk where those small files are currently stored that has the problem. Run a full defragment , which will possibly move around the files, and test again in this case.

PS: but again they are not drawing power from my system, they are adapter powered which is connected to my UPS,which is in fine shape
We will know that when the simultaneous tests (as in (3)) are done. Possibly system cannot supply USB signal itself to 2 drives simultaneously - that comes purely from the system and not from UPS. This will most likely be due to USB driver problem.

chances of both casings being bad in a particular way are less, but possible.
..... only in case of USB HDD to USB HDD.
Problem is, it is not proven so far that both hard drives have the problem. One hard drive might have the problem. The experiments (1) and (2) above isolate the hard drives an do similar things, in an attempt to prove this.

no USB y cable :(
i have seagate expansion,i will use it too in test.

1.i once lost some already existing data on my drive due to this issue,so i dont want to take risk with data on drives.
2.i zipped the folder on USB HDD-1(SUCCESS),then i transferred this zipped file to USB HDD-2(SUCCESS),and then i started unzipping it on USB HDD-2,that is when it created the same issue.corrupt files and unresponsive drive...BUT I AM NOT 100% sure,i dont remember this scenario completely....will test this approach too.
3.Disk is defragmented.
4. i will test all these scenarios but right now i need to transfer existing data somewhere, which is pain as all other drives cant accomodate that data due to less space.will take some time :(

so my final conclusion is:

the USB casings i have are not upto standard,i enabled write caching but still it gave me same error again but when i tried with new seagate expansion drive ,then i was able to transfer a lot of small files without any issue..one of them is a local casing but other one is the one i got with LACIE external drive but i guess even that one is not a good casing.

Thanks a LOTTTTT amitkher and blr_p for your time and replies. :)

It would seem your particular casing is faulty. Maybe an exchange would fix it.

I've been using a generic casing which goes by the name techno tech (with a 2.5 inch drive) and its been perfect so far.
