My system has two hdds - one 80 gb and one 500gb. Windows is installed in the 80 gb disk whereas all the data is on the 500 gb. Today when I tried to access the 500 gb disk through windows explorer - it wouldn't open - the win explorer stopped responding. I tried to access the disk through command line (d:) for running chkdsk - but it is giving me "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". I was unable to experiment more with the drive as I had to left for office.

In office when I google for the error it shows that most probably the HDD has gone bad and developed bad sector. Is it true?

Is there any way to recover the data before I give it for RMA?

After a lot of trying this morning I was able to run CHDSK /F the affected HDD. It showed some errors (one of them was volume bitmap error) and corrected them. No bad sector was detected. After that I was able to access the HDD. But again after a few minutes earlier problem occurred - ran chkdsk again and it got solved.

So, what is the problem here? Is the disk faulty or there is some error with the filesystem etc.? I will try Seatools after I backup my data. What other software can be used to check it?
