A friend's HDD has gone cold and there was some really important data on it. It's totally dead. Can anyone guide me to a good data recovery firm in Kolkata as he needs the data urgently? Any help appreciated.

I dont know anyone in Kolkata who will handle repair of the dead HDD - but I have some adresses in Mumbai in case you want to try them.
 
Here are 3 I found on one page.... I think Vestronics may be the best bet of these 3 ... they have been around for some time now - they will proably know which is the business end of a screw driver :).

I do know of another data recovery company located in gurgaon. Its Stellar Information Systems Ltd deals in data recovery software and data recovery services. If you are suffering from data loss all you can do is to send your hard drive to them. They are going to analyze your hard drive free of cost and will send you the report on that basis. If recovery is possible and you are able to find your data there then you will be charge only for the recovery.
