THE PRICE of DDR2 memory is set to rise during the second half of this month, according to DRAM Exchange.

Well that's what the Dramurai propose to try, but while the memory makers may propose, it's the market that disposes.

DRAM Exchange said the proposed move is to push DDR2 prices closer to DDR levels, and thus switch the market in 2006 - something the Dramurai failed to achieve last year.

It said that the spot price of DDR2 512Mb memory nose dived since the middle of April, but prices trended closer to the contract or OEM price between October and December of last year. It sent us this chart to illustrate the 512Mb DDR2 pricing.

The Exchange also says that Samsung's DRAM output has only increased by a factor of five per cent quarter on quarter, but NAND has soared by 44 per cent quarter on quarter. And that trend is set to continue, because Samsung will reduce DRAM production by three per cent during the first quarter, while flash memory will leap by 17 per cent.

According to DRAM Exchange, NAND flash prices fell last week after some Korean distributors dumped Samsung and Hynix stock. The absence of a NAND based Apple notebook in Steve Jobs' announcement accelerated that move.
