Which is better in the following;
1. Gigabyte 8600GT - 512mb DDR2 @ Rs. 4000
2. Gigabyte 8600GT - 256mb DDR3 @ Rs. 4050

ddr3..

the 86gt cannot use the extra RAM.

also.. the zotac 86gt sells for arnd 3.5k nd the mercury 86gt sells for 3k odd

Performance = DDR3 > DDR2 Coz of high frequency/high bandwidth & lower latency..
Power Consumptiom = DDR2 > DDR3
Overcloking = DDR3 > DDR2
So, its worth to go with 8600GT 256MB GDDR3..

The 256Mb DDR3. I remember reading somewhere that the 8600Gt cannot utilise the 512 MB.

ddr3>>ddr2...........much faster....
mercury 8600gt 256gddr3 sells for 3k odd....wud b nice choice but 1yr warranty.....zotac at 3.5k wud b great with the warranty it provides...:)

Lots of people have been talking abt Mercury and Zotac 8600GT .. yesterday i scoured all of Laminton Rd but couldnt find any .. even Swapnil from Prime contacted many dealers but he couldnt find any.

Can anyone plz tell me where to buy these cards in Mumbai.

and if a 8600gt has 512mb ddr3 then will performance increase since I saw one with 512mb ddr3

Yep, there would be performance jump, but it would be hardly noticible..:D:

For which game ????
The 8600GT can handly current (and future) generation games @ 1280 (some at 1024) ........
With 512 MB DDR3 the GPU becomes a bottleneck.

Don't go beyond 256 MB, not recommended.

it should have a better min fps,less stuttering though i haven't seen any reviews recommending it.
oh and those saying 8600gt could not utilise 512mb of ram,if it were true i wouldn't be able to use 1gb ddr2 stick on my 64bit ram channel:rofl:

^^ what they actually mean is that the 8600 GT wont be able to use the extra memory for any noticable performance gain . Not that the memory won't be detected or anything . (I hope I am not misunderstanding your above post)
