hi!

i bought a 160gb hitachi 5400rpm/ide 2.5 laptop drive and have been using it with an external casing since july 2008.my drive fails to be recognized in its casing and after testing it with 2 brand new spare casings which were lying around i couldn't connect to my pc using usb.

the information in the drive is of critical importance to me--and before you flame me for not taking a backup this hdd was meant for backups and the backup drive(this drive) has gone kaput!!!

is there any other way of connecting it to the computer other than usb?

also i tried calling the 1800--toll free hitachi number---it says the number doesn't exist--gt it from techenclave forums.had to call up some singapore number then and the office was closed.

would hitachi recover the data for me??

I seriously doubt any data recovery service in warranty claim from Hitachi without any extra cost. For testing troubling HDD in any Desktop system use Laptop 2.5" to 3.5" IDE Convertor It will cost under 100/- and look like shown in images attached.

If anyhow you succeed to detect HDD in BIOS then there would be chance of data recovery by own with the help of recovery tools.

Which casings are you using Sunny?
I am having similar issues with a 2.5" IDE hdd, and Hitachi again. :(
So had put up a WTB for a branded case from Antec/Vantec/CM or something to test it out.

A few friends had issues with cheapo or even Transcend casing but those using Vantec ones haven't had any issues till date.
In fact Transcend ones need that extra cable for power many-a-times but Vantec usually works with just single usb connector. :S

I suppose some times these hdd's external adaptors are duplicate or what. they give a lot of trouble. Personally I have sold a few WD drives and till now there have not been much trouble

i am using a casing made by zippy's @150rs from lamington road and is a year old and then i got a iball casing worth 600rs(10 days old) both these casings are detected in the machine, when connected the harddrive shows up on "my computer" but doesn't open.

both fail to detect the drive and now there's this clicking sound from the drive- the sound of doom!!!

will try to buy the 2.5 to 3.5 ide adapter and get it working.

any idea where/whom to call to replace a hitachi drive??? and how long would it take?

it has some very very very important data from previous data backups which i need to recover or else i am dead!!!!

i always thought hitachi was reliable. I have a Hitachi 160gb sata2 hdd - 4 year old drive in my system with all my music in it and it works well -- silent and cool.

HELP!

i dint get you what exactly you wanna say??? if your disk is in warranty u will definitely get replacement and i guess 160gb coz 120gb are out of age now. But hey you wont get sata in place of pata.
& as for hitachi, u call the above nos. n confirm.

i called hitachi(singapore)in the morning today.

they said delhi/mumbai/bangalore/heyderabad/chennai are the cities where they have their service centers and since i am from ahmedabad i can't avail of rma--so i will have to send my drive to mumbai(from where i bought it) to get the damn thing replaced.

will call seagate and get the harddrive replaced today.

i cnt even recover the data on my hitachi 160 using linux/stellar hangs while scanning it.

i HAVE TO recover the data in my hitachi.any ideas/suggestions?

hitachi wont offer you data recovery. look around for data recovery specialist if the day is very critical. it will cost a bomb though. i have got quote of more than 6k for data recovery in pune of a 160 gb drive.

can try out http://www.stellarinfo.co.in/
