This is my ADSL stats page screenshot and I know there is definitely something wrong with the values marked in red box. Can somebody please explain me the meaning of each and what should be the optimum value for them:huh:

Lemme know fast so that I can go Tony Montana on my city's BSNL people :@

Here are some more screenshots. Reason for me posting all this information is because:

  1. My phone is dead but Broadband is still working so I suspect this has some hand in high downstream attenuation.
  2. My connection drops often so posting values here.
  3. Even though since last night my connection has been upgraded from 512Kbps to 1Mbps, the speed I'm getting while downloading is 60KBps and at best 85KBps. What's hampering my downloads to achieve speeds like 100KBps+ ? :@

According to me, There are just two parameters that are important. looking at these two, you can tell the health of your broadband line.

SNR - Signal-to-noise ratio is simple math ratio between noise/disturbances in line against actual signal. SNR margin is bit different concept but SNR and SNR margin both are used to indicate the signal quality of line. If SNR Margin falls below 10(as in your case) you will have problems like frequent disconnections, slow link etc.low SNR usually indicates line problem.

Attenuation - It refers to decrease in overall signal strength over a distance. in other words, its the phenomena of signal getting weaker transmission. The main cause is distance. Example, you listen to music - the far you move from speaker location the more faint sound gets. its same case with DSL transmission. the higher the distance from exchange, greater the attenuation. in general attenuation upto 40(up & down stream) should be fine after that you will face problems. As reducing distance is no possible(unless you are ready to move your house close to exchange:P) you can request exchange exchange to sync you at lower speed with DSLAM. that should help and give you stable connection.

Bottonline:

you have low SNR, I am pretty sure you would be facing issues.file a complain and get your line Fixed. make sure there are no joints in the wire.

Hope it helps:)

PS: I am not a Engineer.so I am not much familiar with this technical mombo jumbo. So correct me, if I am wrong

No probs mate, u r right, just checked my communication books. Its all correct what u said, I suspected this but just needed a second opinion before barging in exchange.

k this happened to me like 2 months ago , u just need to tell the BSNL guys thats ur DSL link is going down every 5mins or less( this was the case with me) , they took 2 days time but fixed my phone , which also fixed the DSL problem . Hopefully i know many ppl at the local telephone exchange(when ur with BSNL , u got to do this)

This is a server side problem so u have full rights to yell at them :P.

Well, mine are much below and I get almost stable speed ( ~2Mbps). My SNR for downstream is always around 5-7 and attenuation is around 55. But I'm 4km far from our exchange. In fact your line speed ( d/l) is 4672kbps which is much greater than 1024. So the problem may be in your DNS server.

For your convenience, I've attached a screenshot of mine. :)
