Defragmenting = good, just an old wive’s tale.

Re: Defragmenting = good, just a an old wive’s tale.

Well yeah, but you will notice such huge performance boosts only if you have been running the same Windows install since 2 years without ever defragging once. Otherwise regular maintenance runs don't yield such results.

Nevertheless, maintenance runs are all the more necessary so that you don't reach that state where defragging will result in a huge performance boost :).

It's like cleaning your room; do it daily and it's a chore and you don't even notice any benefits.
Don't do it for a month and... :P.

Very nice results of defragmentation :)

But still I see one issue in my virtual environment is that I use VMs with snapshots ... so if I defrag the VM HDD then all changes goes into new delta file :( ... increasing size dramatically.

Re: Defragmenting = good, just a an old wive’s tale.

In windows 7 its given Defragmenter once a week(recommended) should i turn it off ?

Re: Defragmenting = good, just a an old wive’s tale.

I know many users (non-tech) who haven't even heard of defragmenting - surprised when I install and run CCleaner & Defraggler on their systems.

I never really bother defragmenting my hard disk. Whenever I start the windows defrag tool it says 0% fragmentation. :|

I just installed defraggler and it shows there's some amount of fragmentation.

Re: Defragmenting = good, just an old wive’s tale.

Exactly, in Windows 7, it usually says 0%, but when i installed Diskeeper, it showed huge fragmentation in all drives.
I guess Windows Defragmenter still needs to learn a lot. :P

Best is use a light defragmenter once a month to keep the PC in a good state :)

NOT !. "With the results of the tests in, it seems the ‘old wive’s tale’ of defragmenting your HDD to maintain performance is not only true, the results of it were astounding."

What was also astounding were one of the comments on that page by a DonnEdwards that the blogger did not really answer..

At best this test is non-conclusive :|

better to stick to the old wife for now
