Laptops Dell dilemma !!!!

Wanna get a laptop this Diwali.
Dell is offering the best customization in terms of price

My Dilemma is as follows:-

Vostro lappy come with FREE DOS and no microsoft stuff
Vostro lappy also being Business user oriented are dull and not too kool

XPS and INSPIRON look better ,but have MS OS standard in the package.
I cant get these better looking(Colour and looks) without the MS software which I dont need,
( coz i'd rather install whatever OS i prefer every other month & its cheaper)

Emailed them for a soln but they said cant do anything,
its either looks or price

Suggestions please...Coz Acer/HP/Lenovo/others aren't customizable at all :(
and more expencive for same config

Its obvious, isn't it..! :D You'll have to make up your mind one way or the other and make a compromise somewhere... :P

Simple solution: Dell N-series includes the Inspiron 1525 etc WITHOUT OS. Only hitch, these are available mostly in retail, dont think you can order online. Check up. Maybe you can get a dealer to order a custom config for you.

^^ Didn't know about that...!! :) Its something new to me.. probably because of this:
A result of OEM licensing with Microsoft, Dell is also prohibited from advertising these computers. Customers must request them specifically or search for them on Dell's website. The company has come under fire for making the FreeDOS-powered machines no cheaper and more difficult to purchase than identical systems running Windows.

Dell n Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

@kreativekevin: I believe probably this is the only option you are left with right now..

+1 :) ......................

Thanks techie_007

Inspiron 1525 and all XPS/Inspiron can't be customized to ship without the MS O/S

http://dellstoreroa02.sg.dell.com/public/cart/configurator.jsp?prd_id=43096&sr_no=2

the Wiki links are right, Buying without the O/S means i miss out on many basic freebies........

Its actually cheaper to buy a Dell with the OS ,

get a lot of upgrades/freebies not available on the 4-5k that i will have to pay extra for the OS version....

and later format the HDD and install my own O/S

I get a choice of OS

+

some more H/W than a Vostro Non OS lappy

+

the original version of the bloated shit*y MS OS and S/W

Closest thing I saw was the Vostros in the notebook category with NO OS loaded

There is no N series on Dell India & buying it from outta India via a friend is outta the question

My best bet is I guess to call on Friday/last day of the month and haggle for a price drop on taxes/free upgrades and the like on an Inspiron coz even the Vostros wont have Great video cards;dialup modems/ and basic backward compatible technology :(

I guess the Vista/XP is on a hidden partition.Any idea if I ACCIDENTELY ;) erase the stuff they will ship me CD's later?

MS is truly forcing DELL into HELL !!

^^ XP/Vista is not in a hidden partition.. Rather, there is a hiddden recovery partition, that is used to restore the laptop to the factory settings if you ever need to do so.. I think the laptop ships with Recovery CDs or has a software with which you can create recovery discs once.. After that, you can safely format and use the partition in any way appropriate.. Shpuld you ever need to restore the laptop to the factory condition again, you can use these recovery disks.. :D

CORRECTIONS :P

1. Non-OS is cheaper, in India at least :bleh:

2. N-series IS AVAILABLE in India, only in retail though. Goto any dealer stocking dell laptops and see for yourself :P My dealer had some pieces last week :)

3. Call dell and ask explicitly for the N-series, forget the website. See if they are wiling to sell them if you ask for it.

4. Simply walkin to any dealer and pick up the laptops there :P Dealers can also order custom configs I believe though they will take some cut, but you can still bargain as always with them ;)

Thanks but someone told me dealers will take their cut as u said

plus it wont be as expressely customizable

Now in mumbai only 3 DELL outlets

* Croma Store, Malad Link Road, Malad (W)

* Croma Store, JVPD, Vile Parle (W)

* Croma store, Mall Dhamaal, Dumping Road, Mulund (W)

believe me those guys will says take a Zenith lappy Coz its with warranty in Diwali at a great price ?!?!?!

Besides R541002IN8 - Dell Inspiron(TM) 1525 Laptop= Rs 38,982

and with all delv Charges and taxes its a whopping Rs 48,057.56

Now the birdie tell me that some 5% on the tax can be waived off on the phone...but maybe he's is a cuckoo Bird

Guys help me out.....any Dell Mumbai Dealer that can customize for me in Lamington Rd?????

1. Forget DELL outlets :P Use those only to check out the laptops ;) Goto lamington. All laptop dealers will be stocking dell models. Even if not, they can source them if you want to order, So you can get quotes with config info etc without problem :) Similar scene in Pune. Everyone can get dell now.

2. Yes, the tax can be waived when dealing with dell (for some models). They do something where they ship to bangalore first instead of directly to you from chennai (where the laptops come from malaysia I think). Although they do say it can take upto 5 days more for delivery. Good enough guess ;)

3. Inspiron configs available locally without OS:

T5750 (2Ghz) 2Gb 160Gb 15" (inspiron 1525) NO OS. Around 37k here with dealers :)
