Can someone recommend a reliable laptop repair shop for dell laptop in Chennai (Cousin is facing heating issues in Dell inspiron and i suspect a fan issue)

Any idea of how much it will cost for getting a diagnosis and fan repair done? Dell quotes exorbitant price for one year warranty!

Re: Price updates from Ritchie street (Chennai)

^^ Dell have their authorized service centre in Nungambakkam I guess. You are looking for authorized centre or any local reliable shop?

Thanks guys. But do let me know if you or some of your friends have got their laptops diagnosed for cheaper in Chennai.

  • I guess one year warranty extension costs about ~6.5k which is a little too much in case it turns out to be a fan problem. (This was quoted for another friend's inspiron model)
  • AFAIK dell forces you to take 1 year extended warranty for laptops. Please correct me if I am wrong.
  • In case they don't and will attend to one off cases can someone with an inspiron please let me know how much they charge for a diagnosis and if at all someone has got their fans replaced approx. pricing for it!
  • Cousin's laptop was bought in August/September 2008 and has a C2D T5750 2.0GHz (Merom 65nm)

P.S: Sorry for questions that are not slightly not related to thread topic.

just tell them laptop is in good shape and take the warranty. once u tell them its faulty, prices will be double that of the normal.shhh..

Dell is offering a two year complete cover irrespective of the condition of the laptop ... I mean , if you opt for 1 year complete cover , dell will send his service man to inspect the laptop and if he finds any fault , you have to bear the amount for the faulty parts , then only they will issue a warratny , but if you opt for 2 years complete cover - 10K i think , bargainable upto 9K or even less ... and once you go for 2 year plan , they will issue the warranty irrespective of the condition of the laptop ... its better to get a 2 year compelte cover - use it for 6 months or so , and sell it and a get a new one...

^ i have replacement the fan from local service center anywhere at laptop games world that it cost 2-3k only so it has been working at no issue at all :)

 Dell is quoting ~7k for 1 year basic warranty including the re-certification fee.
So while recertifying i think they will find out the laptop is faulty :(
There is a carry in repair center for dell in Chennai. Any idea how much they will quote for fan issues etc.? Any experiences? Please share.

These buggers are quoting ~1.35k for basic diagnosis :O

yes its correct, but your still lucky in one way.

If you were to call up the Dell service Center office and ask them to give you a quote; they would have made you look even worser. Straight away the lady on the phone will be much helpful in dumping of you a Rs.14,000/- one year warranty, else 16,000/- for year complete cover.

I have a dell Insp 6400, though i was offered a warranty recently for Rs. 5500/- cos my Lap is almost near EOL. Dell give support for a maximum of 5 years. I brought my lap in Mar '07. Try bargaining they will run in with some good numbers. Good luck!

Thanks man. Will try to bargain a bit.
Even i had the Inspiron 6400 (Got in June,07) Built like a tank and never gave me an issue :) (Sold it 4 months back and the HDD of the Acer i imported from US went kaput in 2 months :()

The overheating is possibly due to the cake of dirt accumulated at the vents of the fan exhaust. It is pretty easy to open up the laptop and do the servicing oneself if he has the right screw-driver and some basic maintenance skills. Have done the same on a friend's Dell Inspiron before when it began frequently shutting down after playing a game or sometimes even viewing a movie.

Removed the dirt and cleaned the heatsink/chip off the old thermal goop and applied a bit of MX2 as well. Been working good since then.

If you can give a helping hand to your cousin, nothing like it. :P

Yes, same issues. Shuts down even when watching YouTube HD! Problem is he has zilch knowldege about H/W and not sure whether he will allow me to open his laptop :(
Even i have never cleaned a laptop fan :ashamed: But can test my skills with his laptop with Youtube's help :D

^Dude it's a walk in the park. Trust me. There's this small cover covering the heatsink for GPU/CPU and the fan. Pretty easy to take it off and clean. :P

Too much. :P

Just get some clinical spirit - the same alcohol used to rub the veins by the nurse before they take blood samples for testing. Or even Iso-Propyl Alcohol. Chemists should have them in small bottles worth 15Rs.

Errr bad idea. Get the MX2. AS5 seems to be electrically conductive so if a bit flows out to the outer regions of the core, it might short some components.

Stick to MX2. :)
