Dell is to quit the LCD television market! These reports are according to media in Taiwan news!

Chinese language newspaper the Economic Daily quoted unnamed sources suggesting that the firm is continuing to refocus its efforts on the PC market.
Dell quietly retired from the handheld PC market two months ago after pulling the Axim Pocket PC models from its website.

The vendor is expected to roll the last of its LCD TVs off the production line by the end of June. The world's second largest computer manufacturer entered the LCD television market in 2003 and sells its branded models in Japan, America and a handful of other regions.

I dont think they are quitting the LCD panel market..... they are doing very well and I dont think they are dumb enough to kill the goose which is laying golden eggs.

Dell denies plan to exit LCD TV business

Source: Print Story: Dell denies plan to exit LCD TV business on Yahoo! News

Dell will sell a wider variety of television sets made by other manufacturers over its Web site but denied reports that it plans to stop making LCD TVs.

A number of industry blogs reported Thursday that Dell would exit the LCD display market as soon as June, citing a story in the Taiwanese newspaper Economic Daily. That move would allow the company to focus on selling more profitable PCs, the report said.

On Thursday, Dell acknowledged that it is making changes to its TV line, but said it will continue to sell Dell-branded televisions with screens of 37 inches and smaller.

^^ Yep, LCD Panels were in a way revolutionized by Dell when they launched the 30 incher.....

I would say Dell was was more of a catalyst in the US market to get companies like Apple to drop their prices.
The Dell 30" was using the same panel found in the Apple.
With companies like Gateway remaining in the market it hardly likely that Dell will quit the consumer segment entirely. After-all it was Michael Dell that initially wanted to make a foray into this area back in 2003...even before he had stepped down.
Michael must have realised that better get back into running the company before a bum like Rollins drop the company he built up ..into the ground.

Does this mean LCD TV's or LCD Panels?
Firstly, the first post i.e. the news article says this:
Dell is to quit the LCD television market!
I guess TV = television = TV?
Secondly, Dell never did make LCD panels. Companies like AU Optronics, Samsung, etc do.

Not only is this an odd reply, where do you draw these facts from? I'm really really stumped by your statement :S

Precisely why they are quitting, no one knows about them
LOL, just because they arent marketed in India doesn't mean no one knows about them. BTW if you have visited the Dell website (US) anytime, you'd see Desktops, Notebooks.. TV's and Accessories, etc. ;)

^^ Lol, what is this...Deepak bashing time :bleh:

Ok facts...well I said revolutionized which might have been a little exaggerated but post no. 8 by DarkNight would be the more accurate version of what I meant to say.

The last statement about me saying why they are quitting was ofcourse a joke.....something to lighted up the mood or something.

Regarding my first post in this thread :

I didnot know that Dell made LCD TV's and thats what I wanted to confirm.

and regarding LCD Panels, if Dell doesn't make/manufacture/assemble LCD panels then are all these LCD panels sold by Dell manufactured by some one else and relabelled by Dell?

Absolutely Deepak, You got it right. Dell does not manufacture anything as such. They do have an in house "Product Engineering Group" whose primary objective is to design and validate producets. These are then sent out to third part manufacturers who build it to Dell specs.
Thats one of the reasons why one version of Dell monitor may contain a great panel but another of the exact same model may not.

Hmmm, always thought that the Dell LCD's were their own, anyways thanks for the info.

EDIT :

Just notices you had said

Yeah thats what I had originally in mind too, RnD done at Dell and manufactured by third party manufacturer. It still makes them Dell Monitors because the tech behind it is theirs.

Actually its just the design. The displays themselves are chosen based on Dell specs.. Its like Dell says we need this and this and this. This is how the frame / bezel of the monitor ought to look like. We want our logo here.
There are companies like Samsung etc that actually have the R&D budget to build and design panels. ViewSonic monitors are the same...Viewsonic does not design or fabricate panels....they just choose it from a panel manufacturer.

Hope that clarifies the point I made.
