Laptops Dell Studio 15 and Heat

That's a common problem with Dell's laptop designs. Only option you have is to get an extra cooling pad, like a Belkin (rs. 1,200) which might help.

If you're limited on budget, simplest thing to do is keep the lappy in an angled position, so that enough air can flow under the bottom.
 
^^ But obviously MUCH lesser than HP ones. Whenever me friends and me play CS in multiplayer they have to get a pillow under their laps in less than half an hour while I never get one :) (I have a studio 15)
 
@amol_cool... Can you put pictures of your laptop... Preferably intake & exhaust vents... I am looking forward to getting a Studio 15 myself...

^^... I dread this design... Had my HP V3000 with same intake/exhaust & it use to heat up like anything.. Only thing good is full square mesh for fan intake so if used with a lappy cooler it can be cooled easily....

Don't take Studio 15 if you don't like heat. I have used my friend's studio 15(with ati 4570) bottom of the laptop heats up quite alot..
 
I've the laptop, it heats up but not due to the GPU but due to the presence of the Wireless Mini card there, u can verify it if u open up the baseplate. I usually keep it at a much high angled position and will invest in cooling pad for it next summers.

That also depends on what settings have you played the game and for how many hours have you been playing. My friend too has the same model of Studio 15 and when we play CS 2 source on it's highest settings for more than 1 hour it gets heated up to 55 or 60 degrees depending on the air flow.

I have ATI 3450 with my studio 15 and no matter how many hours I play any game it doesn't get heated up so much that I can't place it on my laps :)
 
I have studio 1555 with 9 cell battery. the elevation that the battery provides to the base takes care of airflow. this laptop is much better than the compaq i had earlier.
 
All laptops will heat on usage, generally ones with graphics cards wil heat much more..

This goes for most of the laptop brands and not dell in particular.

Keep the laptop on an elevated surface to allow airflow below it.

Yepp.. all laptops heat up but eventually its the dissipation of heat & how efficient is the airflow that matters... HP v3000 series was notorious with failed mobos numerous times 'coz of a design flaw. The intake grill was only quarter of a circle so airflow was restricted.. I used it with a laptop cooler but still my mobo failed twice & was replaced by HP....

So what matters most is airflow across the laptop through proper vents... If the airflow is bad/ hindered then even a laptop cooler cannot save your lappy... First thing I lookout for any laptop even before seeing its config is the size of intake & exhaust vents...

That's why asked for those pics.... :)
