Hey all

I'm looking to buy the Dell Studio 15 (1555), updated with the following config:

Intel Core2Duo P8600
4 Gigs (2X2) DDR2 RAM
320GB 7200RPM hard disk
ATI Radeon 4570 512MB GDDR3
9-Cell Battery...

... and the works

Now, I need to figure out the following stuff before I actually spend the hard earned moolah... :).. The current config will cost me 56k..

1) 320GB 7200RPM vs 5400RPM.... there's a difference of about 1200 bucks.. Is is worth the extra speed, keeping in mind the extra power / heat...

2) Radeon 4570 256MB vs 512 MB.... I think this has a 64-Bit interface, so is the extra VRAM worth the extra 1200 bucks? Also, in general, how good a grafix card is the 4570? I'm looking at the likes of GTA4, Crysis, FC2, Empire Total War etc...

3) Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit vs 64-Bit... I've never made the move to 64-Bit on my desktop... Would like to know if there are any specific software / driver compatibility issues with 64-Bit?

4) How much of an extra backup will the 9-Cell give me over a 6-Cell? I'm thinking about the extra couple of pounds I'll have to carry :)

5) Is global warranty provided by Dell?

6) For a budget of 50k, is there any other laptop that would match this config? I'm looking at a basic gaming laptop... something with a discrete graphics option.... but no 9300s and 3450s for me :)

7) Is anyone out there a Dell employee and can get me a heavy discount?? :D :P

I know these are noobish questions... please oblige :P

Cheers to all! :)

Definitely worth it.

3) Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit vs 64-Bit... I've never made the move to 64-Bit on my desktop... Would like to know if there are any specific software / driver compatibility issues with 64-Bit? No software/driver issues. And i think you need a 64 bit to fully utilize your 4 gigs RAM.

4) How much of an extra backup will the 9-Cell give me over a 6-Cell? I'm thinking about the extra couple of pounds I'll have to carry :) 9/6 = 1.3 times the battery taking in the efficiency.Your call.

5) Is global warranty provided by Dell? Yes.

6) For a budget of 50k, is there any other laptop that would match this config? I'm looking at a basic gaming laptop... something with a discrete graphics option.... but no 9300s and 3450s for me :) No Idea.

7) Is anyone out there a Dell employee and can get me a heavy discount?? :D :P  Not me.

P.S. Please remove the 3 smilies in line you might get a warning.

yes dell studio 15 is a good choice

7200 rpm is not needed for a laptop, more than heat i think it will be bit noisy also, i have never heard the noise but 5400 rpm's r quite silent,

9 cell battery will give u ~ 1 hr more back uo, but it spoils the looks of the notebook and heavy too, so imo not worth the money

yes global warranty is provided by dell

and yes i think there r many persons here who can get u discounts if they want to .

:P

thanks!! :) m on the lookout :P

did some googling for the 4570 chip... and was sad to find out that it's pretty much an entry level solution :(... any other alternatives in this range??

An excellent laptop i'd say. same specs you mention will cost you 70 - 80k or more from other manufacturers. getting P8600 @ 50k is a dream..

HD4570 is good gpu, performance is more or equal to desktop versions of 4550/9500GT.. You will be able to play games @ 1024 with medium settings..Not sure on GTA4. Don't go with 512MB VRAM, its simply a waste with 64bit memory interface on 4570..
Yes, 9 cell battery is worth to go with though your lappy will get bit heavear..
customise 4 GB RAM only if you want 64 bit OS on it, otherwise 3 gigs is enough for 32 bit..:)

Hmmm, looks like u didn't read my review of my Dell Studio 15. Well no matter, here's the link and if u still have queries, I'm here :cool2:

ok.. i have another option....

Dell Studio 15, bought locally for 56k...

or MSI EX625, via KMD for 53k...

which is a better deal do you think?? and is the EX625 available in India??

:)

i can try to help u on a couple of questions..

go for vista - 64 bit, no issues.. but only if that doesnt cost u extra..

as u can use ur x32 license key, provided you can manage to get hold of vista x64 install disc.

and dell does provide global warranty with 3 years NBD warranty.

I dont know if the nVidia 9600M is better than the 4570 or not. But if you want the 9600M and P8400, you can get it in the Zenith Director Plus Ultra which retails for around 43k nowadays.
