I was customizing DELL laptops at their site and came across the Studio15 as well as the XPS M1530.
I have both configured to almost the same specifications except for the GFX.

The XPS comes with a 256MB 8600M GT card and the Studio15 comes with a a 256MB ATI HD3450.
The cost of the XPS is ~60K and the Studio15 is ~54K.

Is the 8600GT worth the difference or is there something else like build quality, brand of other components etc.. that causes this price difference in these 2 models?

I think graphics card is the main diff. But newer laptops by other manufacturers are providing better graphics card at XPS price.

@anks, how & how much?

yes all the bill everything will be there :-)
i gave one config to one of the te member here it is

DELL STUDIO 15
T8100
4 GB RAM
BACKLIT
FINGERPRINT READER
HD3450
DELL BLUETOOTH HEADSET
3 YEARS COMPLETE CARE ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE WARRANTY
250 GB HDD
9 CELL LITHIUM BATTERY

rest all normal stuff what comes in !!!if u configure this laptop on dell website comes to 85 k will give it for 56 k let me know if u interested . orignal bills eveything will be provided and it will be box packed .

Get the studio if you want a graphics card. The Nvidia 8xxxM GPUs have a high failure rate if you are not aware. They can conk off and leave you in the lurch ;)

XPS1530 looks and feels classy and elegant. The XPS can be bought with about the same config and 8600M GT for 58-59k... The 8600M GT in the XPS is much better GPU...GPU wise its a no contest... But do u need the GPU power?

@bootcamp

Good price!

Are you sure about the 3year CC?

@techie

Source please

THis is corporate language::

During the second quarter of fiscal 2009, NVIDIA recorded a $196 million charge against cost of revenue to cover anticipated customer warranty, repair, return, replacement and associated costs arising from a weak die/packaging material set in certain versions of our previous generation MCP and GPU products used in notebook systems.

Here are other, else do a google and you will get it. Basically, STAY AWAY from ALL 8XXXM mobile GPUs. Even my friends at dell advice against them now ;)

Sure, they are now giving a warranty extension on some models + a BIOS update that runs the fan at a gigher speed, but that only DELAYS the problem, doesnt fix it in any way :P So wat happens when warranty goes? Not to mention RMA hassles even within warranty. I believe Kid)mans cousin had a 1330 replaced thrice :P

So if you want an Xps, get one with Intel only, no gaming on it of course :P

Hence, for gaming, get the studio, the ATI cards work :P

Not really. You work for them I believe so you should be more knowledgeable:P

Anyway, for the uninitiated, the problem was with NVIDIA, NOT dell. Almost EVERY laptop vendor is affected,

Acer, Apple, Asus, BenQ, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, LG, MSI, NEC, Sony, Toshiba... to name a few. Now it's not with everyone, of course. If you hit your Control Panel and find yourself using either the 8400M or 8600M graphics processor, you're affected; everyone else can move on.

So everyone using Nvidia took a hit. No loss to them though, they will recover their costs from Nvidia :P

The XPS is still a pretty sleek laptop, only get it with Intel onboard graphics or wait for an update using 9xxxM GPUs ;)
