Any device that takes 3g sim and creates wifi access point? Should be plug and play from socket like that Tata photon thingy in ads.
Don't want a dongle, since won't be using pc to browse. Just phone/ tablet.

You're looking for a MiFi device.

Lot of options on Ebay. Buy according to your budget.
 
How good are these iball & huawei devices? Saw complaints on fk about them not working after few months.
The huawei one looks good. Wonder if they send data to china...
 
I recently got a tp link w8968 from fk, and it has till now turned out to be a great device. It accepts my 3g dongle and my Bsnl ADSL and whenever the ADSL is down the network is Automatically routed through the dongle. Another advantage is that all the necessary settings are inbuilt.
Not exactly a mifi device but gave me a new reason to be happy with my old huawei dongle.
 
There's a plethora of MiFi devices in the market now, from Huawei, Micromax, D-link etc. When I was looking for one 2-3 years back, Huawei was the only one around and hard to get as well. Got myself the Huawei E585 then and it has been working perfectly for me till now. Replaced it with Huawei E5151 recently, since it has an ethernet port as well and comes in handy when I want to convert a wired LAN to WiFi in the office or in conference rooms.

The advantage with these devices over the plug-in ones, is that you can use them on the move as well, since they have an internal battery and you don't always need to be around a power socket. Of course you can keep it plugged in & charging if using for extended periods of time.
 
Use an existing 3G smartphone with hotspot features and turn it into a MiFi device. UMTS/EvDO

dongle + MR3020. If you want battery backup, MR3040 which accepts Nokia batteries (need to check). UMTS/EvDO

3G WiFi dongle (you get them on FK/Amazon for 2.2K) + battery backup. UMTS.

Proper MiFi device with display -4.5K. UMTS.
