:ashamed: ok, i might be the only person in mumbai without a mobile. so what exactly is the diff between pre- and post- paid plans ? except payment being done in advance ? i mean whu would one choose a post-paid plan ?

oops, wrong section.

Prepaid cards are those where u pay in advance for the services u avail while postpaid is billing, u pay later on for the services u have used. ;) Post paid plans are good for those customers who really don know how much their usage could be or for the freedom of using their cell without having to recharge again and again, while prepaid for those who want to keep a tab on their usage and then recharge as and when they feel is appropriate.

BTW, i dunno whether u wud be the only person without a mobile but i sure do know its a bit too early for ur age to use one:)

i would suggest you stay away from post-paid plans if you wanna keep your fone bill under control.

the service providers have different tactics to extract money by offering services which would not be useful.

for example, they will not let you switch to prepaid before you complete 45days with post-paid plan..they will will make you write different letters and get many documents (which you already submitted while get post paid connection) while switch over... They will offer you plans which only sound good on paper... like free 12000sec free per months for Rs250/month...

comes down to 200mins per month @ tarrif 1.25/min ... normal rates for prepaid are 50ps/min.

Caller ID service maybe charged.

All the free services that you subscribe at the moment of application of postpaid will not be free forever..generally those are free for 2-6months only...

terms and conditions vary upon service provider.

the only post paid plans that you shall consider are corporate plans which you can inquire with your employer.

otherwise prepaid is safe and affordable.. (a recharge of Rs50 gets you validity for lifetime on vfone...lifetime =5yrs.)

^^ thats right. U need to consider all of the above mentioned by Madnav. there are lots of fineprints which people miss most of the times and end up paying for services they thought were free.

I can only guess you're 14-18yo?

Prepaid have an advantage that getting a new prepaid is relatively easier than post paid where you need to provide a lot more details which helps as a lot of people come from outside the city for work or studies.

Prepaid however is costlier than postpaid on a per call basis. It suits people who get a lot of incoming calls but do very few outgoing so the monthly commitments of post paid would be a waste for them.

am i the only one who thinks life would be so better without cellphones :|

stick to prepaid for a good control on ur the amount u spend monthly...

I just picked up a reliance pre paid 1 paisa calling Cdma connection , life has become so simple after that, 6 months validity on recharge , no fear of getting overshooting the bill or budget along with total control over cost.

As said by others, get a pre-paid card. On paper, you might think postpaid is cheaper but in reality it comes out to be more expensive.

The bloody operators try to convince you to go for postpaid and they can go on for hours and hours on how it is better. They just want you to go for postpaid so they can milk money from you.

Pre-paid plans are much more VFM as they attract more customers nationwide. After paying an average monthly bill of 3-4k for years on post-paid plans i switched over to pre-paid. Every month i recharge Rs. 89 and get 20k SMS free nationwide, Rs. 55 and all STD local calls @ 1p per second (for an year) and if needed Rs. 199 and i get 1000 minutes free voda to voda. From average 3 - 4k to max Rs. 300 per month :hap2:

Best part is on a recharge of Rs 200 i got full talk time and during festivals they have even gives Rs 222 talk time on recharge of Rs 200, so it is definitely cheaper than post paid connections for now.

Please go for prepaid only coz I am using prepaid & my maximum expenditure ever done on my connection is 400 rs. Now as I am having lifetime validty it comes around 300 to 350 only with all the 50p/ call & unlimited sms per month.

thanks all. now for someone who is almost always in mumbai, not many calls, which would be the best operator ? hows good ol mtnl ?

mtnl/dolphin network used to be crappy 3yrs ago..tat is the lates i have used it in mumbai.
avoid BPL/Loop .. their tariff is one of the best and the network coverage is the worst.

the only network that i get connected from anywhere is vodafone so far in past 4-5yrs.

Airtel has equally good coverage in mumbai.

Consider: Vodafone, Airtel, Idea, Aircel
Discard: Loop, Docomo

Talk to people in the locality where you would be using your connection and then maybe you will get 1st hand reviews about which provider has better coverage in the concerned locality. That will shorten your list further...

PS: im talking only about GSM networks..no idea about CDMA.

It is good only if you want 3.5G speeds on your mobile. Else nothing is good in it. If you are a shopoholic i suggest you get a vodafone. For other specific queries we should know how your usage is gonna be like you would be calling friends among your college friends or just messaging etc.
