hello TE guys whats difference between Ath. x2 250 and ph. x2 550BE. Is there much difference ?. which is the best in price to performance ratio ??? . plz explain
i know that the x2 250 has only 2mb cache whereas the latter has 7mb cache and more by 100 mhz. Apart from this what are the other differences ?

Is the x2 250 a good buy for office apps / windows 7 / casual gaming ??

its not with the mobo, but with the correct proccy batch, that the X2 550 gets unlocked.

Most 790 mobo with SB 750 can do the unlock if its the right batch.

In gaming, there isnt much diff b/w X2 250 and X2 550. But in other apps, there is considerable difference.

But an unlocked X2 is in different league. Its as good as the X4 940 or the X4 955[if paied with ddr3].

There are quite a few difference in both the architects.

Phenom II X2 is basically derived from the quad core dies of Phenom II X4. Out of the 4 cores since two get rejected due to manufacturing defects AMD disabled the defective cores and rolled them out as X2. Hence today we have Phenom X2 and X3 which are nothing but X4 in reality.

Apart from this L2 cache for Phenom II in your mentioned processors is 2x512K and L3 cache is 6MB
For Athlon II in your mentioned processors, L2 is 2x1024K and there is no L3 cache (Which is a drawback)

The Maximum supported Memories supported by CPU memory controllers are DDR2-800 / DDR3-1066 and DDR2-1066 / DDR3-1333 for Athlon II and Phenom II repectively in your mentioned procs
Again "BE" means Black Edition something similar to Intels EE(Extreme Editions). BE processors core is unlocked and hence can be over clocked. These processor come at a price and overclocking would increase the power consumption hence would not be recommended for office use.
