Disabling Windows 7 Activation

Hi guys,

Recently the OS (Windows 7 basic) installed on my Dell Inspiron 14R crashed. So instead of calling up the Dell people I decided to install Windows 7 myself. In my office I have the Windows 7 Ultimate (original DVD) both 32 & 64bit editions. I installed the 64bit version and upgraded all relevant drivers without a hitch.

Now I want to know since this DVD has already been installed on another PC and activated, can I also activate windows on my laptop (though I haven't tried yet). If no then how can I disable the activation process and use it just like the hacked versions.

^^You do understand that you are actually asking on "How do i use p1rated Windows 7 by avoiding activation" ??

This thing is gonna be trashed by mods

Btw since originally you had windows 7 basic which came with your dell laptop, you can install another copy of basic only (whatever be the source) and use your legitimate key to activate it. This i would be the legal course.

AFAIK, you are allowed two installations for a single license (one desktop and one laptop) as long as both are not used simultaneously, but you still have to call up MS tech support and activate it.

If this has changed after XP I'm not sure.

You cannot use the same key for activation on two different computers at the same time...Also stopping the windows activation counts as piracy which is illegal and discussing this is not allowed on the TE forums...best option will be to keep using the same windows 7 basic with the key that came with laptop. If you still want the Win7ultimate OS then you have to uninstall the Windows 7 Ultimate from your office computer and then you can use it on your laptop, that will be the legal way..

^^Still that office win 7 ultimate must have been a commercial multiple user license which is probably not valid for home use.

So best bet is to either get a windows 7 BASIC DVD from somewhere or even downloading is fine unless and until the downloaded is an UNTOUCHED copy and also OP used his legitimate key to install on laptop.

^ Call up Microsoft customer care and ask them if its possible to activate on both desktop and laptop. Like Cranky mentioned I remember they did have a policy like that.

Otherwise get hold of a Windows 7 basic cd and activate it using the serial key that should be stuck below your laptop

That policy was only for XP. Its been scrapped for Windows 7. Incase of windows 7 you will need to get a new license. On a side note, hope Microsoft releases a 3 user pack here too.
