My cousin had a 20GB ATA100 hdd, I finally convinced him to go in for a larger SATA hdd. I suggested he clone the old hdd to the new, to avoid having to reinstall the os+updates+drivers+apps. However, the guy who is installing the new hdd says this is not possible - it will not be possible to boot from the new hdd.

I know it is possible to clone a hdd with winxp, but I'm not aware if ata100 to sata is possible or not. Nothing on the net, so far.

He will not be using the old hdd after the new hdd is installed.

Help, anyone ? Thanks.

Cloning is possible only when the drives are of similar make. You cannot make a image of your drive and restore it on to some other drive of a different make. The image is created is the raw format/structure of the drive. so it just makes an exact duplicate of the structure along with the data. If you have a bad sector on the drive somewere, the corresponding sector on the other drive will also be marked bad in the process. The software has to replicate even the partitioning structure.

Just to let you know more about the process, the QE people in our office have to test our software on about 20 different language versions of Win XP. so they just make images after install and restore it from the image. this saves them a lot of time as can do the process in 8 min. the HP machines we use have either a 40GB Seagate or 40GB Western Digital. We cannot even restore the image taken from the Seagate to a machine with Western Digital without facing problems. But in any other machine with the same Seagate 40GB drive, its possible.

Edit: we use WinImage. I dont know for sure whether any other software is able to overcome this limitation. But be careful if you try this process with HDD of different make or capacities.
