I have a Philips DVP642k and LX3600D (connected to diff tvs).

The DVP can play Divx files..while the LX3600D is a HT package with 5.1 sound.

I want 5.1 sound with Divx movies but the LX3600 takes only stereo aux input from the DVP.

Now, what i want to know is that...is the ability to play Divx files hardware based or frimware based?...i mean..if we can get a modded firmware for the LX, will it be able to play Divx movies?

Divx playback is hardware based. You need special chips for playback of divx's but the ability to play various versions of the codecs based on four cc is firmware based. Support for new releases of codecs can be added by updating the firmware. Besides not all divx have surround sound. Most of them are stereo, movies encoded with ac3 will have surround sound.

u'll need dolby prologic 2 to get 5.1 sound from divx files. But I doubt any of the dvd players w\divx playback have a DPL2 processor onboard.
