Do I need Symbian?

I'm thinking of splurging on a new phone. Budget is under 20K, so I guess the prime contenders would include n73/n80 and k790. I was reading up on the camera/mp3/connectivity options, when I stumbled across a more fundamental query - Do I need symbian? I think that should be the 1st thing that I should decide.

So guys, help me out here. What do you use symbian for? What apps are available? Are they free or paid (or pirated)?

I am basically looking for a phone which is jack of all trades. But we'll discuss that later, once I've got the symbian issue sorted out.

Symbian all the way...

there are hazaar old threads on this, but I'll tell you what I use on my Symbian phone...

As a bluetooth remote for foobar

As a SNES emulator for playing Mario and COntra

Trasfer travel docs, maps etc. to access on Symbian office

Symbian has a huge software library and there are som many thing i don't use but many may find useful...

e..g. earlier today, someone posted an article from Gizmodo on some new Samsung phone that claims to be the first phone that can play divX movies/videos...

BS..You can install the DivX Symbian codec on your el-cheapo Nokia 6600 symbian phone and do the same...

Point being , the level of flexibility that the Symbian platfor provides you cannot be beat by any closed format phone

If all you want is a mobile phone with a good camera and music capabilities, you don't need Symbian. OTOH, if you intend on using the phone for browsing the net and reading/sending more than a few emails everyday, then anything less than a smartphone is a letdown for you. While you can install and use J2ME/MIDP programs on non-smartphoens with Java support, Symbian opens a whole new World for applications, development and usability.

With Symbian, you can read/edit/create office documents and share it with others using WiFi, Bluetooth or other connectivity options available. You can install various programs to enhance the phone's basic capabilities, or to add new functionalities as well. I use freely available GNUBox, PuTTY and other tools to enable networking with my computers. I can telnet into my machines with my phone and execute commands from there. Thanks to the Symbian OS, my phone becomes another member of my home/office network. (Wow! That sounds a LOT like those stupid TV ads )

Seriously, once you've used a Symbian phone, you can't go back to dumb ones. I recommend E70 (2MP) as well as N73 and N80 in that range. Sony Ericsson M600i is also a nice smartphone based on Symbian 9 UIQ (touchscreen) interface, if you can do without WiFi and camera.

Thankooo thankoo all :D Well, contra has pretty much settled it for me :P So now the battle is between n73 and n80. Should I start another thread for this?

E70 also seems nice, but I will be using the camera/multimedia features more than the business apps. And I'm not an sms addict as well :P

So? WiFi or Carl Zeiss?

Symbian rules, period.

Whether Nokia or not is another story altogether...:P

Edit : N80 0wns :|..

Seen it in person and was blown apart

Foobar! Contra! OMG! Why didn't anyone tell me this before!

Actually not just contra...pretty much any NES/SNES/Gameboy game...

You get Symban Emulators for the consoles after which it is just a matter of copying ROMs (legally bought of course :) ) on to your phone memory card

As for Foobar, noo, not running foobar on it (though there are enuff excellent media players for Symbian)..i just said i am using it as a remote for Foobar, i.e. I view my PC foobar playlist, search for songs and control playback directly from the phone screen...

Arre, it's a simple fact na...Symbian is a rather popular OS , ise decently powerful too, and perhaps the number of Symbian machines would be lower only to Windows

err....why are we still talking about symbian? :S

Tell me! WiFi or Carl Zeiss? Note - I don't have wifi on my PC, so its of no use atm.

Edit: SC, you using bemused?

^ N73 is pathetic, dont get carried away by Zeiss.. the proccy is sooo slow it hangs forever...

N80 is definately one of the best N series phone out there if not the best..

N80's cam performs equally well to that of N73, even without Carl Zeiss. CZ lens is more of a marketing gimmick. WiFi is an important feature to have, even if you don't have such a setup in your home. You can use the net for free using the 'hotspots' available in many places now.

N73 is definitely overrated and oversold.

Really? Well thats interesting. What do others have to say about this?

Mods - Maybe you should split this to a new thread - N73 vs N80. Or just rename this to "N73 vs N80 - Why to go for symbian"

Sorry for diverting the thread but how would someone telnet using the symbian OS. Does the provider has to allow that OR you have to dial somewhere (that means extra phone bills)

Basically if it relies on provider how much extra cost per month are we talking about ? If someone does not want to remote connect to any other device, would symbian still make sense ?
