hi
i currently have pentium D running at 3.20GHz and in spare i have C2D E7200 which i purchased recently. Now if i change my proccesor then my previous windows run or i have install it again.

Re: A NOObish Query

reinstall it to be on the safer side---in case you get a blue screen and windows crashes.

Re: A NOObish Query

Windows 7/ Vista will run fine .

I have done it myself three times. I am going to do it again this month by selling my Phenom II x4 955 and getting an i5 750 .

Reast assured

Windows XP may crash

Re: A NOObish Query

If you're changing the proc alone and using the same mobo, there won't be issues.

If you're changing the mobo + proc, then a re-install is needed.

then no need to reinstall anything.

just shutdown.

replace cpu.

boot.

If you still have doubts then max you need to do is..

Go to Device manager..

Uninstall things listed in 'Processor'

shutdown.

replace cpu.

boot.

wait until windows realizes the new cpu.

Changing a proccy will never need a OS reinstall.

OS install is only needed when you change ur mobo (because the hardware abstraction layer is changed since the chipset changes) or HDD (since you lose your boot sectors).

So, unless you are changing these, you can be assured that you can be happy with the current installation. :)

Yeah...No need to install Windows even after the Mobo replacement . Have changed the Mobo twice and Processor thrice . For Mobo only the drivers are needed . Just put the processor and restart the computer , u r good to go .

i installed a new proc, mobo, and ram on an hdd with xp already existing last week. I just ran an xp repair off the cd just after assembling everything and it detected all the new hardware. the only problem was firefox stopped working so I had to reinstall that...

XP may crash. Re-installation would be your best option.

>_<" what?

@ OP: You don't need to clean re-install it. At times, certain bios versions record the same clock speed/vcore of the previous processor and hence cause instability when achieving a certain load. However, certain bios detects the default clock/VCORE gets detected immediately, especially when its not overclocked

However, as a healthy practice, once you swapped the processor (or any hardware connected internally), do a CMOS reset by removing the battery on the mobo, then set the date & the time on your bios and that's it.

:D :D

I'm loving it!

If you're changing the proc alone and using the same mobo, there won't be issues.

If you're changing the mobo + proc, then a re-install is needed.

QFT people, this is the correct answer.

It may be possible to use the same install for a new mobo with some trickery, but it's not worth it in the long run. Guaranteed to be unstable and unpredictable.

the trick is to boot in safe mode..
view all devices in device manager. (including hidden)
uninstall all drivers related to he component being changed.. (that includes ACPI Basec PC for mobo)
shut down.
replace component.
boot.

OR
if that is to be done automatically then just run a repair install if the motherboard is replaced with one that has completely different chipset.. (but old drivers wont be removed in that case)

Why do you want to change to i5 solution , your current processor is good enough for most apps , i dont see much improvement plus all the hassle to replace the mobo too !!

it its just the processor u r chaging and that too in the same field like intel to inte and amd to amd.. then it will work ...

But if u are also changing ur motherboard or switching from intel platform to amd or vice versa .. then u need to resinatll it !

Hope it helps !
