Do not hold the item for a seller unless there is a valid reason!

Hi TEians,

Recently, it has become a fancy thing for few people to say "hold it for me till so and so day" and then stop responding on further PMs or calls. I lost half a dozen buyers due to this kind of activity. Luckily, I found new buyer later (and am thankful)

If you are selling an item and if someone says 'please hold it for me', you better tell that person that you will not hold the item and the one who pays first will be the one who gets it first. Even if the person pleads, you better stick to the procedure. Becuase if you lose all buyers, you can't do anything or raise voice against the one who backed off because action will be taken only for deals that went wrong.

Just my two cents! Have a happy sale.

I agree..... but then it sometimes becomes difficult to say no to prospective buyers having high iTrust ratings.

I always follow this: First to pay gets it, unless the person who has asked to hold me is very well known to me. I still, warn them when I have a ready buyer and ask them to make a decision instantly.

I also follows the same procedure. pay and get it. else i should have dealt with the person who wants to hold atleast once and i know he will come through.

Well bros in some case, the buyers have to check other things before they can confirm to buy an item. For example if a come across a mobo in the market section and if i am interested in it then first of all i will have to check out the budget and various other things (like how to gather the asked amount / how or where to dispose the old mobo etc.), and for all this i need some time, say few hours.

So i usually asked the sellers from whom i buy items to hold the item for me till evening, next day etc. And if by chance i can't carry on with the business then i just say that "i back out"

By this post i am not supporting the others in any fields, i am just clearing my thoughts.

Thanks Bros

^^

How abt bothering the seller AFTER he did all his work. when everything is ready. no one is forcing anyone.

Me too man ... I lost 2 buyers in selling my GTX470 ,they were giving me 13,500 shipped which was on hold for manomax for 5 days :(

I disagree. I have not sold any item yet, but for buying, I always require atleast a day of time to check the prices, budget etc. I always tell a deadline, please hold this product till tomorrow morning. If I am not interested, consider it released. But buyer who sees / considers the product first should get the benefit too.

there should be a rule that an item can be on hold for ONLY 12/24 HOURS max before its on the roll again... i guess its better that way... its fair for both sides i guess..

5-6 days on hold!! that's insane man...

+1 to that. This definitely makes sense.

I completely agree and also thankful to "desiibond" in opening this thread. Just feel that there should be a rule that a buyer who is asking the seller to keep the item on hold and if he doesnt repond to the sellers call or PM's etc then the seller should go ahead and give a -ive feedback for the person who was suppose to purchase by this the same thing will be affected on the rating and the person wont do this with anyone else also the same thing will be visible to all the members.

This is just a suggestion i might be wrong. :)

I strictly follow "no holding business"...why should someone ask to hold something which he is not sure to buy?better do all the RNDs beforehand and then send PM...I can hold only in case he is ready to buy, like if someone asks that for the online payment he needs 1 or 2 days, that's fair enough.
anyway I believe that if the pricing is good, nobody asks to hold but they pay first n ask to ship...

Its all personal discretion and common sense IMHO....no need a rule or something.

If seller feels he can wait for a buyer,so be it.Sometimes, really interested buyers will have to see if they can arrange the payment and don't wanna be left in smoke when he comes back panting with borrowed cash and all, so asking to hold a product for a day or so is quite understandable. But whether the buyer thinks accordingly is another story....if he is in a hurry or have a number of prospective buyers waiting to make payment, its quite understandable that he wish to take the 'Early bird' policy. All in all, i don't find it abnormal for a buyer to ask for 12-24 hour timeline to make up his mind AND/OR cash.

Post such threads in the feedback section.

And yes I agree, I would rather sell it to the first buyer than the first poster. In fact I would rather select the buyer based on my convenience like time/place/mode of payment. That said I would not back out of the deal after confirming.

Count me in..

This community is built on trust and responsibility. You need to be responsible for your own action and at the same time trust others. If someone hurt you that means you need to take precaution next time. Bluntly say that you'd not be doing holding business. First come first serve basis.

For example.. I sent something to someone for free.. that person was suppose to check the thing and return in case he did not like it.. that thing was kinda useless to me but might have been useful to the other person. Later I discovered that the thing I sent to the other person was not of any use to him. Ideally I should have got my thing back without any followup. And even if I did not get that thing will not make any difference. But I wanted to check the credibility of the person. So I followed up after over a month of delivery of the item to the other person. Its been more than 15 days now, I have not heard anything from him. So moral of the story. You would get burnt in the beginning but eventually you would learn from all these instances. And this whole story is around 2 months old now..

Very sensible post. IMO you can't have a rule on market deals regarding to holding as its really upto the buyer to decide whether he wishes to hold or not.

IMO, I would never ask anyone to hold something for me unless I knew the seller very well and I was pretty sure of buying.

Similarly I would never hold the item for anyone unless the potential buyer is known to me. It is always whoever pays first gets the item. I got burned with an earlier sale as the buyer who asked me to hold went AWOL and in the end decided not to buy.

If someone wishes to do research or check market prices before buying (which is always recommend) should ideally not ask the seller to hold as the seller should not have to miss out on a sale from someone who is ready to buy.

I agree with Desibond but sometimes a genuine buyer might lose out due to his inability to procure $$$ in time.

What I suggest is keep a maximum holding time of 48 hours for the first buyer and keep the second buyer ready incase the first doesn't make the 48 hours.

If the buyer urgently wants it then he can hold it for another days time with a 2%-5% higher price and so forth.

Max holding time looks like a good solution. I had once given 12 Hours of holding time to a buyer, He did not reply within the limit, sold the things to next buyer in queue. Kept updated both of them while things were on hold.

However in my case both the buyers were genuine and reputed members.
