i've been on the hunt for a new broadband provider and was previously told that Airtel has not reached my area.

today, i found a phone & DSL tariff plan posted on the notice board in my apt building lobby... service was provided by a company by the name of Bharati Telecom (is it a typo? Airtel is under Bharti Telecom)... called up the contact no. provided and the guy said the connection is provided by Airtel... i was like woohoo!! airtel is finally there... then i asked abt the 256k unlimited broadband plan, and he mentioned it would cost 2.5k rupees.. WTF??!!!

last i checked, Airtel's website listed the 256k unlimited plan as 999 rupees per mth... so my question is, is it possible that Airtel works through resellers/franchisees who hike up the tariffs?? i was under the impression that Airtel provides the connections directly... hmmm....

btw, i live in mumbai... bandra specifically... anyone living in the area using Airtel had a similar experience??

AFAIK unlimited 256 plan is 2.5k if u don't take the phone connection with it which is weird ...... ask them if they are providing the phone connection with it or not .... ??

i thought it's a must to take a phone connection, because Airtel broadband works thru DSL.. so phone line is a must...

besides, the lowest cost phone plan is like 300 rupees per mth... so it'd make sense to just take up the phone line, provided that it means they give the 256k unlimited plan at the usual Rs 999/mth tariff...

I have a 256 kbps connection at offfice (gurgaon, haryana) and I am not paying 2.5k its just 999 + taxes, first they used to charge modem rental but now they have done away with, also the telephone rental is included in the package but no free calls, they were also giving some minutes free on 1 local number + 1 STD number and 1 ISD number for first 3 months...... don't know for sure whether this offer as expired or not.. also registration charges have been waived....

Airtel works of its own... and not through franchisee route

yup. when i was in india 2 months back (and i'm pretty sure my family back home is still paying the same thing), i was charged 999+ something for 256kbps unlimited from Airtel. i also had that option of double bandwidth at night for 50 rupees extra per month. totally it worked to about 1200 for 256 during the day and 512 at night which was pretty much the best home plan in all of india with regard to value for money. i always downloaded at my max speeds, even on bittorrent after some portforwarding and my pings to all gaming servers in india were about 50.

i too am from bandra. they've still not started their services here. been waiting for ages. any idea if Tata is available in Bandra

i checked with Tata Indicom last week. they replied that their service has not reached my area yet.

let me find out more info from this Bharati Telecom company tomorrow. if it's true that it's Airtel, that'd be awesome. provided the rates are as per Airtel's website ;)

i have a 256 unlimited for 999 which becomes 512 after 11 in the night

they give like a 1 mb line to these guys and they distribute it further ...

i ahve one in my place ..

had it till airtel came and then told him to f**k off..

he was giving me a 64kb for 1k .. ;p

if this guy is there that means that they have laid their cables and there and they will give u one ...

just call up the airtel helpline and tell them u want a line

LOL...this bharati telecom broadband is the 1st BB service i had subscribed to when i got my comp...its operated by some company called UNILINX. My local cable operator is the service provider here ( I live in Nasik if you missed). He claims that they buy the bandwidth from airtel and provide the service under this brand name. But the strange thing was it wasnt ADSL, it was normal cablenet. He setup the network on a nearby building and just connected a cable to my comp. Initially when i had subscribed to their net it was unbelievable kool. I play CS online and i used to get pings ranging from 1-10 on VS n FS and the dl speeds would touch 280KBps (thats right, KBps) on normal dls, not torrents nor p2p, normal dls. But since this wasnt ADSL, their speeds started reducing drastically as the users increased. Although the pings hadnt increased by much, towards the end their dl speeds had decreased down to 9-12 KBps on a 256k line. To top it off there used to be innumerable downtimes, every alternate day for long periods and the service was simply pathetic. They would play passing the parcel with me till i finally ended up calling their office in bombay. Finally when i had had enough of it, i took out the cable threw it out the window and asked the cable guy to come collect it and if he dared to ask me the reason i would strangle him wirelessly. Well, this is my personal experience...rest is up to you to judge ;)

^^ hmm, now this Bharati Telecom is sounding shady... looks like it's not direct from Airtel afterall... let me get a hold of the salesperson and tariff rates first, before i update further...

^^ update, just got the plans faxed over... it is Airtel indeed... plans are same as those listed on Airtel's website... Rs 999 for 256k unlimited... woohoo!! Airtel service has reached my area :D

JFYI Airtel, Bharti Telecom, Bharti Broadband, Bharti Tele-venture, Touchtel, all are the same i.e. first they were under different brands of the bharti group but now they have consolidated themselves into 1 group i.e. AIRTEL ... just check the person who comes to your office he will have an AIRTEL identity card and an Airtel jercy also the cheque will be made in the name of BHARTI TELE VENTURE LTD or BTVL .... atleast this is what happens in gurgaon and delhi

where in mumbai..i jus called airtel an they do exist in neighbouring area but when i asked they refused......i m on hathway frm past 1 and half year same 256kbps plan..but i m finding this 1120(all inclusive )quite expensive now)........also they giving good plans to nightbird.......

even the 128kbps plan frm airtel is good becozsome ppl get double speed on nights and they pay ard 800 per month.....quite good i think
