Does anyone know how to ship a processor?

Hello everyone, I wanted to sell my AMD 5th generation processor, but I'm worried about being able to package it properly without damaging the pins. I have the original box but I do not have the plastic tray that stores in the processor in the box. Since this CPU has pins on the back, I do not want it to break or get damaged during shipping, so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Anti static bags is your answer, normally called as ESD bags, some electronics DIY Indian sites have these in stock.

This is recommended for electronics. When you buy hard-disks, graphics cards, motherboard, they are wrapped in these kinds of bags for a reason. If you want even more safety then throw a bag of desiccant in the pouch to remove any trace of moisture buildup.

The regular thermocol is not static safe nor is the normal bubble wrap, the right kind is a form like material of black color that you get when you buy processor, I don't know what it is called. Normally people don't care they use whatever they find, and get away with it most of time, because the devices now have some degree of inbuilt ESD protection.

won't the CPU pins get damaged if i just use this with 0 protection? i thought those pins were supposed to be super delicate
Another option is to visit a local computer market and look for shops assembling PCs. You can ask them for the plastic CPU tray after they install the processor, as they typically discard it.
that was what i was thinking, the store that i got my pc built in just threw the processor tray away before i could ask for it :(

For devices like these, the key word is "ESD anti-static foam", google to see images. This is the recommended stuff.

Also comes in pink version.

Black Conductive Foam

  • Conductive & ESD-Safe: Contains carbon or other conductive materials to provide continuous electrostatic discharge protection.
  • Can Be Grounded: Offers better protection for highly sensitive ICs.
  • More Durable: Typically higher quality and reusable for long-term storage.
  • Used for: Storing and shipping highly sensitive ICs, such as microcontrollers and MOSFETs.

Pink Anti-Static Foam

  • Dissipative, Not Conductive: Reduces static buildup but does not provide true grounding like black foam.
  • Short-Term Protection: Meant for temporary storage and transport.
  • Lower Cost: Cheaper and more common in general packaging.
  • Used for: Less sensitive components like resistors, capacitors, and some ICs.
